Pedal recommendations...

Alright guys, seeing as I'm leaving the modeler gear and going tube, I'm going to be needing a few pedals to get back the effects I use most. I normally just use chorus, delay, wah, and I figure I'll want an OD of some sort to give me boost into lead tones. So name me some brands and models of these pedals that have impressed you (or disgusted you), so I can sort of compile a list of things to look at or avoid. Again, chorus, delay, wah, and maybe OD are all I'll be looking at for the next few months. Thanks guys.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Delay - line 6 dl4 (no brainer)

chorus line 6 mm4
Boss CE-2, CE-5
Wah RMC, Fulltone, or modded vox

Dist TS-9/808 (modded) Boss sd-1, ds-1, fulltone fullldrive, HAO rust driver (plexi sound), Mesa V-twin, the list goes on and on and on and on............

Re: Pedal recommendations...

DL-4 for delay again.

MM-4 for chorus, again, and that'll get you any other modulation you need.

Wah, Dunlop CFH Dimebag Wah, or at least for more metal/thrash/shred stuff. Super versatile.

OD, modded tubescreamer or MXR Zakk Wylde.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

I'd go with Boss on the chorus and delay. For Wah ?? Fulltone, Vox or a
Dunlop Crybaby Modded w/t fulltone parts
For O.D. The good Ole' Tubescreamer ( Modded to TS-808 spec's). :D

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Any thoughts on the 535Q wah pedal?

I'm definitely looking at a modded DS-1, the Keeley Ultra mod looks pretty sweet.

I had no idea the Line 6 Delay and Mod units were so popular...

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Can't go wrong with the Boss stuff for Chorus and Delay.

I also suggest the Ts-9 for OD

For wha I love My Bad horsie, I have to admit thought that a lot of guys don't seem to like the Morley stuff. Mine sounds great though to me and I LOVE the fact that all I have to do is step on or off of it.

i have a 535Q, and it is good, but it does not compare to say the fulltone deluxe, or the RMC-3. One of these days I want to have my 535 modded to tru-bypass and have fulltone parts put in it just to see what it can do.

As far as the DS-1, if you can find one at a pawn shop for cheap, and send it to stratdeluxer, he mods them, and they sound phenominal!!

Re: Pedal recommendations...

My Picks:
Chorus - Boss CE2, CH1, CE20, Line 6 MM4 (for other modulations as well).

Delay - Line 6 DL4 (can also get chorus sounds if you know how to play with it right), and the new Line 6 Tonecore Echo Park pedal. Boss DD6 works great too.

Wah - I use a Dunlop 535Q with a fasel in it (they sell them like that and its labeled on the box) and it ROCKS. the most versatile wah I've ever used with above-average sound. I'd also reccomend the Jimi Hendrix Crybaby as well as the 95Q for a switchless twist with q control. Vox McCoys and Fulltones are very cool, too.

ODs - Oh wow I'm a total OD/DS pedal junkie, wrong question to ask me LOL. In a nutshell i prefer Keeley and Indyguitarist takes on Boss stuff (I'm currently getting immense enjoyment out of an IG Hot Rod BD2 and a stock OD3), G2D (Classic Overdrive, Morpheus dist pedal) and Fulltone (Fulldrive 2, Fatboost) are great as well.

What I DON'T like:
Delay - Boss DD3's and DD5's because they're too thin sounding. Digitech XDD for sounding like its under water.

Chorus - CE-5s, they're not intense enough for me. Digitech XMC chorus... too one-dimensional. Ibanez CF9 RI's good basic sound but they suck mids.

OD - I've never been a fan of Tubescreamers (sorry guys!) or MXR stuff. Forget about digital pedals, they're just too cold for me.

Wahs - I tried a Bud-wah that sounded very thin, which surprised me cuz i heard those were supposed to be good. Stock, regular crybaby's just aren't phat enough for me, and the Rocktron Black Cat moan was sort of... feh. Morley Bad Horsies have this weird tonality i dislike (although i thought the Tremonti wah was outstanding).

Re: Pedal recommendations...

I was looking into the Line 6 DL-4, but heard some bad things about it, like the stomp buttons are mounted directly to the circuit board and break easily. I ended up going with the Boss DD-20 twin pedal, which sounds great, has presets and a bunch of different delays, and is built like, well, like a Boss. Check out the reviews at harmony-central.com if you haven't already.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Ah, thanks for a few "don'ts", that's great. I'm not a huge Tubescreamer guy either, just not my preference. Thanks guys, keep 'em coming :).

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Just don't buy anything by DOD (Donny Osmond Distortion) (Dead On Delivery)

or any product that sounds so bad, you'll actually ZOOM back to the store to return it.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

Haha, no worries Gear, I do have SOME experience with pedals but it's been a while. I never liked most DOD, Zoom, or Digitech stuff. I'll probably be looking mostly at Boss stuff, the wah, and maybe Phase 90 at some point. I don't really use a lot of effects, but I gotta have my chorus and delay :).

Well, I think any pedal runs the risk of having a switch break. I've owned a Line 6 DL 4 for nearly 4 years now and haven't had a single problem with it. And it gets quite a bit of use. I highly recommend the DL 4 not just for it's many delay settings but also for the Loop function. That in itself has been worth the cost of the pedal for me.

As for Wah's I own both the original Bad Horsie(used with my high gain amp) and a Chrome 535 Crybaby with my clean setup. Vastly different wah's but but I'm pleased with both in the context of the tones they provide. If I were to choose one over the other, I'd go with the 535 Crybaby due to the different wah settings.

For a lead boost, I can't recommend the Germanium Boy pedal enough, although it carries a hefty price tag. Check into the Zen Drive as well.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

As far as OD pedals go, I've been real happy with my SD97 modded SD-1. Great tone, on the cheap!

I had an extensive talk with a line 6 rep/technician just before i quit Guitar Center (this was around about April) and i mentioned this problem. He said they'd acknowledged it and it had been fixed. The buttons are still mounted on the boards but the mounting method/construction has been fixed to prevent breakage.

Boss DD20 is an excellent pedal, too.

Re: Pedal recommendations...

I got a tuner and sniped a CH-1 for dirt cheap, and since those are the only things I know I'll use EVERY time I play I can sit back and price watch on the other pedals. The DD-6 is very interesting, as is the Keely DS-1 Ultra mod.
