Looking to upgrade from rocktron utopia. i've got a tube combo amp, so i want to get something with effects and different distortions. any suggestions?

Dr jekyll and mr hyde. It covers the basis of a tube screamer and a heavy distortion like a ds1, love mine and like the distortions it puts out better than my boss me-50

cool, someone else mentioned that to me at guitar center but they didn't have one to try out. the only thing is that i'd like to get a multi-effects pedal instead of stomp boxes. i'm NOT interested in amp modeling because i already have a good tube amp.

My suggestion is stick to stompboxes. For each type of pedal there are so many different shades that you'll never find the best best of everything in one box. Mixing and matching stompboxes is fun, and the most flexible route to go. It matters not whether your goal is to put together the perfect setup for you, then stick with it, or to endlessly swap pedals for fun and (negative) profit.

That's turning out to be the case with me. But, if you're wanting an all-in-one deal, then get a used pod xt, or a tonelab. They're great for a variety of sounds. Of course, nothing will sound like a cranked plexi, or like David Gilmour, but who achieves those in the bedroom anyway?

Big +1 I've used both and stompers do seem to have better tone IMHO.

Unless you go for crazy rack stuff, I find most multeffects are going to be amp modelers with effects or something like it. Stick to the stomps! Plus, a big pedalboard looks cool.

The Tonelab floorboard (don't remember if it's the SE or the LE) has some pretty great tones, and I like the wat it's set up better than the Boss or the Line6 pedals. But yeah, to echo everyone else I always seem to try multi-effects out but end up going back to single pedals.

the other guy I jam with runs a Tonelab SE through a valve king with a strat-he can get some great sounds out of that thing-way better than the presets that are on the front end of the bank. It's built well, laid out nicely, has stereo outs, and is quite portable.
I almost picked up an LE-and still might-but I'm feeding the stompbox monkey right now.

The people who make Jekyll & Hyde make another great pedal called the Rt66 . It has the tube screamer overdrive circuit and chip along with an MXR Red Box compressor clone. I dumped all my multieffect boxes awhile back they just kill tone. My favorite pedal for OD is Fulltone's OCD pedal. They make great handmade stomp boxes with hardwired bypass and quality parts. There's a lot of great pedals being made today we're in a golden era so if you have G.A.S. then get them all. The Vox ToneLab uses a 12ax7 tube and have circuit designs of the amps they emulate so you can plug one right into a PA system and sound good. I prefer a good amp though I've used modelers at small coffeehouse/bookstore type gigs when backing up acoustic players.
