Pedal suggestions...

Looking for effects pedal suggestions for hard chugging.

So far running a 2018 solid body mahogany body and mahogany set neck, Indian Rosewood fingerboard Gibson L.P with a set of Pearly Gates, with a 58' wiring, and a set of dunlop billy gibbons/ string labs string 07/38.
Plugged into a Marshall MG 100 HDFX halfstack.
I play a mixture of metal and blues.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.20191126_181535.jpg

I don't think you should have trouble getting "chug" distortion out of the amp. I'm gonna suggest a very different approach: Delay

And yeah - get some heavier strings!

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Well, .007s might be unconventional, but it worked for KK Downing.

Dare I ask what sort of metal? That is a pretty wide umbrella, and recommendations are going to vary accordingly.

Re: Pedal suggestions...

for chugging? I'd move up in string size... so you can put more attack on the string.

Effect? for Chuggin'?

Maybe try a Compressor out and see if you like a more compact tight sound

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Mincer, have been looking further into the palladium as well as the vapor trail, digging them both. Thanks for the suggestion.

Parametric equalizer? That is really the only effect I associate Dimebag with...

I have both the Palladium and the Vapor Trail on my pedalboard most of the time, super reliable and versatile, since I play everything from very heavy stuff to blues/classic rock. Mincer's suggestion was a solid one.
If you go that route definitely would be interested in hearing what you wind up thinking of it!

Duncan just released a new distortion/boost pedal called the Diamondhead that I've been getting into lately, it's actually got a bit less gain than the Palladium but I've been pretty impressed with it so far.

I tend to use a heavier gauge string set (usually 9's or 10's) but if the 7/38 set works best for you, go for it. I've heard some guys get some good chunk out of some light strings before, it can happen!

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Well pulled the trigger on the palladium and vapor trail. Currently in the process of a pedal board build. So when the build is complete will post pics and a video of both pedals in action on the new board. Thanks yall for all the feed back.

See - for killer PAntera sound I think the impact of an awesome noise gate is highly under-rated and misunderstood. It's about the quick silence, not the attack!

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Hope the Palladium serves you well. For home practice and jamming I liked the boss ML2 Metal Core pedal. It has lots of great super heavy tones in it but it’s just not voiced right to be in a band setting.

I just got the MXR 5150 overdrive and man it sounds great, I prefer it to the amp distortion channel on my Marshall DSL combo, at least for more modern metal tones. If you end up not liking the Palladium I suggest that.

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Love to see the pedalboard when done, and hear your thoughts about those 2 pedals. I wrote a blog about the insert jack on the Vapor Trail, which is super fun to play with.

Re: Pedal suggestions...

Just get one of each pedal available, and I'm sure you'll find the best one. Wait, that has been my approach, maybe you shouldn't do that.

This is one of the reasons why I normally recommend that people get an HX Effects instead of putting together their own pedal boards these days.
