Pedals In/Out of Loop?

Just wondering, who runs their FX through their loop and who simply runs it through the front. Please be sure to back up your position with reasoning helping to explain why you do.

I've been running in front of the amp for some time now, never really gave the loop it's chance. Maybe it's time, maybe not...? Thanks guys.

Re: Pedals In/Out of Loop?

I run my wah, boost, distortion, & EQ pedals in front of the amp.

I run my modulations, filters (except for wah), time effects, and EQ in the loop.

My reasoning? I think of the preamp is nothing but a really fancy clean boost/distortion box that feeds into the power amp. I would rather add chorus to my distortion than distort my chorus, so I run it after my preamp distortion.

Besides, alot of modulations sound better when fed the hotter preamp signal as there's alot more signal to modulate.

Re: Pedals In/Out of Loop?

I run my TS-808 in front. That's where it goes, and I don't have a Loop >(JCM 800 2204's )

Re: Pedals In/Out of Loop?

I'm working on getting my pedalboard put together. I plan on allowing for a proper effects loop in it.

Basically, anything that is touch-response and/or dynamic (autowah, envelope filter, distortion, wah) goes straight into the input. I'm putting my modulation and time delay effects into the loop (flange, phase, delay). When I really feel like setting things up, that's how I do it. However, most of the time I grab whichever I know I'll be using and throw it all in front of the amp.

Nothing to add to this very good analysis. Personnally I have Boost + auto wah + delay in front of the amp and phaser + chorus in the loop. As said above I should place the delay in the loop but I have tried this position and don't like it so I put it in front of the amp so whatever the rules I prefer to use my ears to decide. Concerning the phaser it sounds way better in the loop and above all with distortion it makes a great difference. So there are general rules that helps for a first try but in the end you have to trust your ears.

Effects loop, Wah, Chorus, Dist/Overdrive, Noise gate, Fender M-80 1/2 stack.
