Peg Winder

I have the Dunlop peg winder that is somewhat sloppy and when turning the key it bangs on the other key when winding. It is a bit of headache while restringing. Are they a standard size or are they different sizes looking on the internet its hard to tell from the pictures. I will continue my search.

I use a planter waves adapter that fits into my cordless screwdriver... Or the old Dunlop hand crank winder. And unless I turn the other key slightly, I still hit them. If that helps any...?

CHRIST! You are *****ing about a piece of plastic that cost a fricking dollar?

Has it ever occurred to you that the gears on a Strat are closer together than on a Les Paul?
Or if you put bigger tuning buttons on your tuners there might be a space problem?

Do you really think ANY manufacturer will make different winders for each make of guitar?
They are already making a big 35 cents in profit - so let's sink it all into developing more gear for whiners?

Or if you put bigger tuning buttons on your tuners there might be a space problem?

I use a Planet Waves one with the string clipper built in. It doesn't seem to have any of the problems that the cheaper ones have.
But those aren't really problems for me. I just used my hands for years.

Godin15, I have noticed the same thing with stringwinders… That they tend to bump into the other pegs as you're using them. However, I guess I don't really worry too much about it because I only use the winder to bring the string up close to pitch. At the fine-tuning stage, and when stretching the strings, I'm using my fingers anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference.

Thanks Bri actually I do the same as you do. I realize I could turn the keys to allow the winder to work somewhat better, but because I replace one string at a time I do not want to release the tension turning other keys. I also realize I could cut all strings then turn keys to work the winder better. I only cut all strings at once when there is a setup and cleaning done . In this application of changing strings thought there might be a better winder.

Well I'll say it... you're wrong. Everything about the rude and insensitive way you reacted to this thread is wrong. Who the hell do you think you are to call someone a whiner just because he asked a question that YOU thought was silly? If you don't like the question, just move onto the next thread... don't act like a dick to the guy!

I've interacted with the OP on several occasions and find him to be a pretty cool guy with some great insights and who, like the rest of us, comes here for great information and some camaraderie with a bunch of people with shared interests. Go to Jemsite if you're going to treat people like this!

Dunlop used to make a peg winder that could be used manually or in a cordless screwdriver. I don't think they sell it any more. I've had it for years. I always use it in the cordless screwdriver. I don't think I could find the handle if I tried. Other than that one, I have some cheap winders that came as throw-in's with string and parts orders. They work fine but nothing beats the Dunlop in the cordless driver. I think Planet Waves makes one that works with a cordless driver.

I machined a piece of steel, and welded it to a drill-bit, no interference issues, and with a low-torque cordless screwdriver / drill, makes winding very easy...

To be fair though, the content of the goober's post is accurate.

There are SO many different tuner head dimensions that you cannot make 1 to fit all. Even if the size for the width of the tuner is right, they come with different thicknesses....some plastic, some metal. Look at the thin wafer-like Waverley tuners by comparison to the thick plastic klusons.
The Plastic winder requires a mould to make, and these are an expensive constructive element for an item selling for very little. Hence you might fit the winder with maybe 2 common sizes.
Even then you wouldn't want it to be too tight, as you want it to slip on and off easily. The idea of the winder is speedy operation during restringing, and having it be tight on the tuner is wholly counterproductive. You also align tuners with maximum space between them during this operation so there is the most space for the tool operation. Tuning to exact pitch during the process of stringing up is pointless as you need to have all strings on there and stretched before it is of any benefit.

So in the whole, the OP just doesn't quite understand the scope and use of the product. Its just that the message could have been slightly less aggressively put across.
