Perfect Pitch training - does it work?

Since my young teen years in the mid 90s, I have bought countless guitar magazines. Almost every one of them have a perfect pitch advert touting the amazing benefits of being able to recognise notes by sound and how it opens up an entire world of possibilities as far as composition / improvisation is concerned.

I never bought it cos I lived in Singapore at the time and the US mags didn't ship there.

I would like to know if anyone has ever tried out any of these PP training programs and what the results were.

In fact, does anyone here have perfect pitch? *Calling Mr. Malmsteen*

u stayin in sg ? i think guitar mags do ship there. if they ship to malaysia they ship there too. the prices are insane in malaysia tho. there is another singaporean board member, dani. he seems to be very experienced with guitar stuff. PM him and ask.

Yes and no-
What they really are selling is relative pitch and this works very well- It's the idea that you can identify iternvals without knowing the underlying notes- Search on sigith reading and relative ptich and you will find a lot fo the basics- Simple things like-

5th= evil soliders march from wizard of oz "Oh ee Oh"
4th= Here comes the bride
Octave=somewhere over the rainbow
7th- first note in orignial startreck theme

many more like this-

Once you have intervals down, you can get a sence of key and I have favorite songs that I play back to get key- For example I can hear "more than a feeling" in key of D correctly, 99% of time-

But this isn't perfect pitch- If you play me a song in Db and then ask me to pull out more than a feeling there is a good chance that my ear will get fooled-

On the other hand, true perfect pitch is problaby something you don't want, it's something that you are born with and those that really have it usually grew up in music and had it constatntly reinforced especially in early childhood- Horn player buddy in college was always on the edge of a breakdown becuase he litterally had perfect pitch and nothing out there is on key- He use to critique the birds, his hearing was that fine-

Anyways, Perfect Pitch must work. If it didn't they would need a more attractive spokesperson

Now that's the look of a man with perfect pitch:D A man who has forsaken everything from fashion to hygiene (well, except for teeth whitening) to pursue his love of perfect pitch. Amazing. That's dedication. He knows his looks aren't what's going to attract women to his shows... his perfect pitch more than makes up for that!

(disclaimer- I have never tried/used/thought about using perfect pitch. Their mascot scares the sh!t out of me frankly, I'm afraid to see what horrors would come if I actually ordered their product. I simply am a master of stating the obvious:D)

I have had perfect pitch since age 6. It just came naturally - no classes or anything. I can tell you what note you're playing blindfolded at about 95% accuracy.

It is a mixed blessing. When I go to a jam or learn new material, people are always amazed at how quickly I pick it up. On the other hand, I tend to get really frustrated when other people don't pick up the tune as quickly as me, because I can't figure out why it is so difficult for them. When your brain has worked a certain way your entire life, it's hard to imagine reality any other way. I also have the same problems as zionstrat's horn player friend, although not quite that severe.
