Perpetual Burn in a hybrid?

Hey, folks! I'm a long-time lurker and I finally decided to join up. I look forward to learning more from everyone, and sharing my modest experience.

Back in 2009 I made a couple of hybrid pickups for my Gibson Faded Flying V - a 59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge and a Jazz/Distortion neck hybrid for the neck position. I've been using that set ever since. These pickups are great. I love the extra dimension and harmonics you get with these hybrids. They really stood above any of the pickups I had used before. Having said that, lately I've been thinking about making a change.

I would like slightly more focused mids and clearer top end, without getting too far away from the big 3D sound of the hybrids. So, I thought it made sense to make another pair of hybrids using pickups wound a bit more lightly. The Perpetual Burn came to mind since it's wound more lightly than the Custom, also likely with 43 gauge wire.

I did search the forum, and I didn't find any mention of using a PB this way. Has anyone tried to hybridize it with any other pickups?

Which model would I mix with it? I want to keep the mids thick, so I've been considering some of the more mid-heavy PAF style pickups, like the Whole Lotta Humbucker, Pearly Gates, and the Slash. I'm leaning toward the WLH because I want to use either some sort of an A5 or maybe an A4 to keep the bass tight, and I'm not sure if others will keep their mids without an A2 magnet. If I felt more confident that it would be fine with a different magnet, I think I'd prefer the Pearly Gates, though.

For the neck I'm thinking of a PGn/Screamin Demon hybrid with an A2.

I just wanted to bounce this off of the pickup expert collective to see what you thought. Thanks to you all!

Jazz/DistortionN hybrid? I'm much more interested in that !

Re: Perpetual Burn in a hybrid?

Yeah, for the neck I was trying to keep the 42 AWG/43 AWG recipe, and the DDn seemed like an obvious choice. I did use the A5 mag from the Jazz, not the ceramics from the Distortion. I'm pretty sure I used the screw coil from the DDn and the slug coil from the Jazz, but it's been so long since I built it. At one point I ended up "airing" the screw coil by just taking out that metal block at he bottom of the coil. The idea was to make it just a bit more single-coil like. It was so long ago, I can't really describe the difference that made. As it is now, it cuts, has really good harmonics, but still has a good low-end foundation.

Now that I think about it, a DDn coil for the bridge pickup might work for what I'm trying to do...

Re: Perpetual Burn in a hybrid?

Just wondering because I took a DDn and just swapped an A4 magnet into it, also swapping the Filister screws for hex heads. I have it in a Triple Shot ring and it sounds very good clean split to the hex coil. Also in parallel.

Due to the law of physics, to make a hybrid p'up for the neck position is a lot more difficult.

The result of my experience with the "Hy-Bro" project, the best match for the ''59/Custom hybrid was a
PGn screw coil/Jazz neck slug coil, both output and tone-wise.

I hear you, Lt. I guess I should visit your threads on the hybro. Just did a search and a lot came up, so I'll need some time to sift through it. I did see that Orpheo made a SD/PG hybrid that he really likes, so that's encouraging, too. He might be matching it with something quite different from what I'm intending to use for my bridge pup, though.

I'm still wondering about the PB as a component of a bridge hybrid. I think there's a lot of potential there. I also searched for info on using the DDn in the bridge, and it seems that it tends to be very bright in that position. I don't feel as positive about that vs. the PB.

So you think that the Jazz neck has 42 gauge wire ?

Demon screw coil, PGn slug coil should be the right recipe.

I wouldn't use an A2, if you're matching a stock '59/Custom, though. An A4 would be a better suited choice, IME.

Sounds like good advice. But, I am planning on replacing the 59/Custom. As I said earlier, I'm hoping to get something that retains the essence of the aforementioned mighty hybrid, but with slightly more midrange focus and top end clarity. I'm counting on slightly reduced output in order to meet that end.

Re: Perpetual Burn in a hybrid?

Make a hybrid of a Perpetual Burn and a Tone Zone (prolly not possible), but it could be called a Burn Zone.. : )
