Hey, folks! I'm a long-time lurker and I finally decided to join up. I look forward to learning more from everyone, and sharing my modest experience.
Back in 2009 I made a couple of hybrid pickups for my Gibson Faded Flying V - a 59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge and a Jazz/Distortion neck hybrid for the neck position. I've been using that set ever since. These pickups are great. I love the extra dimension and harmonics you get with these hybrids. They really stood above any of the pickups I had used before. Having said that, lately I've been thinking about making a change.
I would like slightly more focused mids and clearer top end, without getting too far away from the big 3D sound of the hybrids. So, I thought it made sense to make another pair of hybrids using pickups wound a bit more lightly. The Perpetual Burn came to mind since it's wound more lightly than the Custom, also likely with 43 gauge wire.
I did search the forum, and I didn't find any mention of using a PB this way. Has anyone tried to hybridize it with any other pickups?
Which model would I mix with it? I want to keep the mids thick, so I've been considering some of the more mid-heavy PAF style pickups, like the Whole Lotta Humbucker, Pearly Gates, and the Slash. I'm leaning toward the WLH because I want to use either some sort of an A5 or maybe an A4 to keep the bass tight, and I'm not sure if others will keep their mids without an A2 magnet. If I felt more confident that it would be fine with a different magnet, I think I'd prefer the Pearly Gates, though.
For the neck I'm thinking of a PGn/Screamin Demon hybrid with an A2.
I just wanted to bounce this off of the pickup expert collective to see what you thought. Thanks to you all!
