Phase 90 and Flanger

Thinking about a MXR Phase 90 and an MXR Flanger (I bet you know already what/whose sound I'm going for here...) but the prices new are pretty steep.

I'm in a new town and its a pretty small place, so the lone music store is pretty sparse for stuff to try for comparison. The local used market is likewise limited.

What pedals sound like the MXR duo?
Any used on the board here? (MXR or "soundalike")

Other thoughts for the sound I want?

Re: Phase 90 and Flanger

If you want a Phase 90 I would save up and get a hand wired script version, or a Whirlwind Orange Box.

I bought a used block logo Phase 90 pretty cheap and did the script mod.

Joyo has their version. I haven’t tried it.

You can get kits for the P90 if you are confident in your soldering abilities, www.generalguitargadgets.com, or you can go the tagboard route if you are really industrious.

An alternative for the flanger would be the MXR Micro Flanger, doesn't have all the controls of the big one, but the basic sound is the same, it will get you ~80% of the way there with 2 knobs and it runs on 9V instead of 18V.

There are lots of P90 clones out there, just search ebay or Reverb, they should all get you close to the original sound. Or, as suggested, just search for used MXRs, they can be had pretty reasonable.

Re: Phase 90 and Flanger

Go with a Phase 95. It does the Phase 90 in script OR normal modes, plus Phase 45 as well.

The old Boss BF-2 is a classic analog flanger, but still plentiful and fairly cheap on the used market. I've used one for years, and it does a pretty fair imitation of the swoopy "Cradle" sound. The modern BF-3 is digital and (IMO) harder to dial in.

Bought a used Phase 90 on Reverb for $45 or so. Nodded it to get it closer to Script sound, love it. Will probably get a Script, too.

Re: Phase 90 and Flanger

If you have never played a MXR Flanger keep in mind there is a slight volume drop when engaged. Some people find it annoying especially if you are looking for the Flanger to boost a lead or make it stand out. I can't think of anything less expensive seeing the MXR is priced very fairly but there are definitlly better flanger options out there.
