phase 90 mod?

Closed Eye

I recently, well last night actually, purchased a MXR Phase 90 from Musicians Friend. While I've tried it before in the store and liked the tone well enough I've heard there are mods to get rid of the mid-boost and "distortion" that occurs when you engage the pedal. I heard niether of these when I tried it but I'll be bound to run into these problems upon closer listening. Does anybody know about or how to do the mods I mentioned? Is this mod recommended?

Thanks.

Re: phase 90 mod?

I think it's done by just taking out one resistor (or just snipping one of its legs, so you can use a drop of solder to re-connect if you like).

I think it's called the R28 mod? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: phase 90 mod?

Yep, R28 is the one to go and make it more subtle. You can also remove C11 and C12, but you might want to test it out with just R28 removed first.

If neither works good for you, the MXR EVH Phase90 is really nice. It gives you this basic mod and has 12db of extra headroom so it won't distort.

I've done it myself and it works wonders!

Photo = helpful!

I like a pretty pronounced phase effect. Am I to understand the mod makes the phaser more subtle? as in not as loud or phasey? or just takes away the distortion and midboost?

it makes it more subtle, but still nice sounding. if you like the way it sounds, then i'd leave it like it is, but for me, that more pronounced effect got on my nerves, so i snipped the r28, and and loved it ever since. the only problem i have now is when i run it in my rectoverb's effects loop, there is a slight volume drop when i turn it on. i think i might try running it in front for now on.

Re: phase 90 mod?

I read somewhere that EVH used his old one for a gain/solo boost sometimes. This would mean the old vintage ones have the gain/mid hump mentioned?

The problem that comes into play is that the stock ones have gain, but they're harsh and clip the wrong way. Don't think with these mods that the pedal won't cut, it just will be sweeter and a bit less pronounced (but much more usable).

Re: phase 90 mod?

I got the Phase 90 on Friday, played around with it through my POD, and I actually kinda liked how the stock version sounds.
I may still do the mod because it sounds a little dark, I guess 'cause of the mid boost, but as far as watery/wavey phasy-ness goes it does the job pretty well.
Thanks for all the help guys!
