Phase reversal! Worth doing??

Is it worth phase reversing ?
I am thinking of doing this with a duckbucker (middle) the one that will be reversed, and a 59 (neck) and a custom (bridge). Willit give a usable sound??

If you like mosquito tone (sounds thin...like you're playing through a tiny little nose!) go for it. I've never liked that tone my self. Lew

It can sound good with the right pups. It'll always be thin, of course, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Make sure you neck pup has enough bass, would be my advice.

Peter Green does this in his guitar, but he turns his neck pickup around backwards for more bass. (humbuckers)

Re: Phase reversal! Worth doing??

My Dean Hardtail came wired from the factory with the middle position selecting both HB's out of phase. It's not really my thing. I suppose it can provide some different tones, but I'm more of a meat and potato's type player, so I had no use for it.

Out of phase pickups work better if you have a volume control for each pickup, as in a Les Paul or Hamer Studio....or Gibson Lucille or ES-355 like BB King uses.

Then you can blend the two together with unequal volumes which sounds fatter because if they're both full on they just cancel out all the bass and sound really thin and nasal.

If you watch BB King play, he's always adjusting one pickup against the other to find the sweet spot...but you can't do that with a guitar with just one volume control.

In a Strat type guitar or one with only a master volume control, out of phase pickups sound extremely thin and nasal all the time.

I'm not a big fan of phase reversed pickups, even in a LP or 335 type of axe. I feel you lose too much output and low end with this configuration.
