Phaser pedal placement?

Where does a phaser pedal sound best in an effects chain and why?

Before or after a wah pedal?

Before or after distortion/overdrive pedals?

Before a tremolo pedal?

Anything else?

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

Effect and especially phaser placement is a very personal thing. I can argue to no end that one placement sounds better and another person can argue that their placement sounds better, and to both of us we are right.

I generally like phaser before all drive/distortion. It gives a more subtle and 'chewier' sound that I like. The exception is when I want a very modern, almost synth-like sound trying to emulate an LFO, then I like it after dirt, and even in the effects loop. You have to be careful with effects loop placement of some pedals. they can't handle the high level. Sometimes it gives you a very interesting sound (the Small Stone grits up and grinds nicely in my loop, but that might not be the sound you are looking for)

I also like wah before dirt, so I'll generally go wah, phaser, blah blah.... As far as tremolo goes, it depends on how I'm using the trem. Usually that comes latter in the chain for me, but sometimes I like it before dirt so you get a wave of rising and falling distortion. And finally when I really want to get crazy I'll put the Seek-Trem in the loop with a phaser after it for some awesome arpeggiator type synth sounds.

The best thing to do is experiment with placement and see what worls best for your gear and the tones in your head. For me that kind of experimenting is one of the best parts of playing guitar. :)

Best is totally subjective and some people would say before dirt, other would say after, and others would say not in the chain at all, sitting in a box, because they find phasers boring or cliche no matter where you put them.

Its not rocket science after all, plug it in a few different placements and get an idea for the sound and figure out what you consider best to mean.

Its quite the different sound either before or after the dirt. Heck for a while I had an extra distortion pedal plugged into after the phaser just so I could have both the sound of the phaser before AND after the dirt because I had a need for both sounds, if that tells you anything.

Cheers

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

I like phaser either just before or just after dirt. Both are good. The latter sounds more "modern" and hi-fi to me, the former is gloriously grungy.

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

I use my phaser after the wah, but before the tremolo. I'm using amp distortion and everything goes into the front. I don't use the loop.

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

Thanks for all the input. I ordered a Retro Sonic Phaser and I guess I'll just have to noodle around with it when it arrives. I didn't know if it was as cut and dry such as reverb or delay pedal placement for example.

I'll just mess around and see what happens.

The Retro-Sonic is a great Phaser. I think you'll be pleased.

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

The phaser acts in a similar manner to a wah in that it acts as a filter. You could place it anywhere you would want to place a wah and get decent results. That said, and as many have mentioned already, there's no right or wrong place to put one. I put mine after the wah, but before any overdrive.

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

PFDarkside covered it well. I move mine either side of the dirt, depending on what I am going for sound wise.

Re: Phaser pedal placement?

It is safe to try it out anywhere. I usually put my phaser early in the chain before distortion, since I keep my flanger after distortion.
