Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

Hey guys.

I'm currently looking to buy a Phaser pedal (and and Ebow, but that's another thread :D), but aside from the obvious 1's (BOSS, MXR, EH etc) I don't really know what my options are or which 1 would be best for me.

I know alot of people will probably say 'get a Phase 90' straight away, but I hear alot of things about the input of them distorting when used with guitars with humbuckers. Can anyone shed any light on how true this is? Does the script mod reduce this distortion at all?

I've also heard alot of good things about the EH Small Stone USA re-issues, but due to the sheer size of them, it's not really an option.

Marshall also do a Modulation pedal (the RG1 Regenerator) that has 2 types of Phaser, 2 types of Chorus, Flanger and Univibe on it. This is a digital pedal (whereas the others I've mentioned are Analogue) but just wondered if anyone had any dealing with this pedal at all?

Ibanez also do a Tone-Lok Phaser (the PH7) but again, I've never played this 1 myself either!

Basically, i'm just looking for opinions/advice on what would be a good Phaser for me to get.

Thanks.

Craig

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

I have had a lot of phaser pedals over the years and even thought I have had a LOT of cool phasers I always seem to come back to a Small Stone of soem kind...real vintage ones, NYC reissues, Russian Reissues...my current one is a Russian reissue. I do wish they were not so big...and now they aren't!

EH just scaled down some of their effects and the Small Stone was one of them!!!

Thats clearly not your only option but it looks like a good one...

I hear alot of great things about the Small Stone, but the size of them has always put me off. Now I don't have to worry about that :)

I'll deffo keep my eyes open for these!

Thanks mate :)

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

every Small Stone I have ever owned 9it's bee quite a few) had a slight volume drop when you turned them on, if you buy your Small Stone new from Analogman he will mod them to fix that or if you want to send one to him to fix it he will do the mod, I don't know if the Nano will do it too, they might have fixed it from the factory this time...all that said I have never had mine modded!

The MXR phasers are cool and I do like those too but for me most of the time the Small Stone is better for me you could also just look into odd ball phasers...I bought a Maestro Mini Phase several years back that is simply amazing but hard to find and also sort of pricey these days. Foxx has just reissued one of their phaser pedals and that should be cool...the world is FULL of options.

Good luck mate

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

To be honest, I'm not looking at spending all THAT much on a Phaser.

The usual price of new Phase 90s is about £80-£90, but I recently found some new at £52 (plus postage). Which si the only reason I considered them!

I've found a local shop (about 13 miles away) that has the Nano Small Stone in stock, so I might have a trip down to try 1 out. They're also £48 new, which is alot cheaper than alot of other Phasers I've found.

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

Both TG and Guitarist have reviewed the Marshall pedals, and the Regenerator and Echohead have had good comments, plus they're flexible and good value. I'd like an Echohead.

Boss PH-2.

Setting I is a great Phase90 type phaser and setting II is a flange like phaser. I actually think it's one of the best phaser pedals every created and, even though I don't use it anymore, I certainly recommend it for anyone looking to get "into" phasers.

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

I LOVE my Russian Small Stones. Cheap, beautiful sounding. I couldn't want anything else, unless way cheaper :D

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think I'm choosing between a new Phase 90 (£52 + p+p) or a EH Small Stone Nano (£48 + p+p). As these seem to be the 2 'standard' Phase pedals, so there must be a reason for that :)

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

I use the Boss PH-1r--I've had it for what seems like forever. My other faves are the MXR Phase 90, and the old Mutron Phasor. The Mutron is AC powered, and very big and clunky--but gives the best Leslie tone short of a Univibe.

The PH-1r is the ONLY Boss phaser I ever liked...I used to have one and I gave it away a few years back...at the time I had 6 or 7 phaser pedals and a buddy of mine was really gassing for one so I gave that one to him because it fit his Boss pedal board. I still prefer an MXR phaser or my Small Stone but the PH-1r is a great pedal.

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

Hey guys.

I went out and tried an MXR Phase 90, MXR Phase 100, a Nano Small Stone, and the EVH MXR Flanger.

I preferred the Small Stone in the shop, so I walked away with that :) I may also buy a new Phase 90 from Ebay so that I can try the 2 pedals through my rig and then I can keep whicher I prefer and sell the other :)

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

Yeah, congrats on the small stone. I've got a vintage DOD phasor (thats how its spelt on the pedal), and it sounds amazing. I have no newish ones to compare it to though.

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

It's a little late, but;

Headroom is an issue with the Phase 90s....they have some sort of clipping going on. You can do the 'R28' mod and it cleans up alot. On the good side this mod makes clean phasing actually sound clean, but on the negative side I thought it sounded better into a dirty amp with the R28 left intact.....the two seemed to combine better that way.

One of these days I'll get around to installing a switch....

Good deal mate...I assume you ended up with the nano version?

Re: Phaser pedals. Opinions needed!

The r-32 ("script") mod on the Phase-90 is very easy: just remove one resister. This removes a feedback circuit and makes the effect much more mellow. The down-side is that some live players complain that it doesn't cut through as well. I installed a RadioShack micro-mini switch to cut the resister in/out of the circuit. I prefer the modded sound big-time.
