Not that simple. What kind of guitar and wood, and what kind of music?

Re: phat cat neck and saturday night special bridge ? wlh bridge ??

was asking anybody who has tried Phat Cat neck pup and moderate output bridge humbucker together in their guitar - just trying to learn something about other guitars and pickup combos - i have a hardtail strat style guitar with an alder body and a maple\rosewood neck - music is blues to classic rock - didn't want to limit discussion to 2 humbucker strats and was hoping any other guitar owners who have tried Phat Cat\humbucker combo would join in --

For me, on the Gibson side of the fence, Phat Cats are too warm and rounded in the neck slot of mahogany for my tastes. Phat Cats have A2 magnets, which have full mids and not a lot of treble. Good news for you is that's not a downside in bright woods/guitars like yours.

I have a few guitars with a P-90 neck (in a couple cases a Phat Cat with brighter magnets), and an HB bridge. That's a great combination, as you get more clarity (and no mud) from having a single coil in the neck, and a fuller, warmer sound for the bridge. Definitely worth pursuing for you.

can't speak to the Phat Cat. anything I remember reading about it has always led me to believe that it would be too soft (warm and rounded) for my applications. I've tried a few things that some consider to fall into the hum-sized P-90. one is the Mojotone "Humbucker Sized" P-90, and I like it a lot...but I've only tried it as a set. another is the DiMarzio Bluesbucker, which I tried in a few positions with include in the neck with a PAF Pro in the bridge and it's currently living in the neck with a Dominion in the bridge....but they aren't technically P-90s.

Joe Gore did a rundown on several P-90 options a few years back and that might be helpful.

The Saturday Night Special hasn't been available long enough for a ton of reviews showing how it works with other pickups. Give it a month or 2, and more reviews will start coming in.

good point about the SNS being new - figured if i put them in the title it would get more attention - don't even know if SNS will be available in trembucker bridge yet - just thinking about something a little hotter than PG - have heard the JB bridge with single coils but want more moderate output --

Do NOT overlook the Saturday Night Special Neck pickup. It's pretty awesome in its own right.

I had the Pearly Gates bridge plus Phat Cat neck combo–sounded really good. Swapped the magnets out for UOA5s and it sounded even better.

The only issue with the Phat Cat neck that I had was it got muddy with a lot of gain (better with the UOA5 but still some mud there)...granted it's not designed to be a metal pickup BUT I think it is worth noting.

What did you have that combo in? How do you think it would work in an SG?

Solution to jazzed out overly bassy Phat Cat neck: Put it in the middle!

If you're choosing a humbucker to go with the PC all you have to worry about is if you think the humbucker will sound good by itself in bridge position. Because the PC will sound good with anything in phase position! (JB + Seth)

I had it in a Warmoth Warhead 7/8 Strat (Gibson Scale) that was all Mahogany (body and neck) with a Redwood top and an Ebony board.

Hmm, I think the Pearly Gates would be an awesome choice! The Phat Cat I could see being too much because of how muddy it got in my Warhead (which was a very bright guitar.)

I have a Phat Cat neck pup with A5's paired up with a 498 bridge pup with A2 mag swap in my SG standard. It sounds great through my Marshall 4104. Perfect blend for classic rock. I know there are better pups than the 498 but it works for now.
