Phat Cat neck w/a PG bridge in an Epi LP?

Re: Phat Cat neck w/a PG bridge in an Epi LP?

I had an Epi Lp and the Phat Cat sounded great in the neck. But all the vintage output pickups I tried in the bridge sounded weak and shrill. I'd go with the Custom Custom.

That's a terrible idea my friend!!!

The Phaty will bury the P.G. in the bridge output wise!!! You have to keep in mind that the strings vibrate a lot more near the the neck than they do near the bridge so naturally it's just a louder pup position.

The Custom is a great choice for a Phat Cat neck but I actually prefer the Phat cat bridge in a H/H guitar setup for H/S. They are just a tad brighter & you can typically pick them up much cheaper used....

I guess I should've checked the output specs before I asked. I was just thinking of tone. I actually rarely use both pickups on a HH guitar at the same time.

Now that Iv'e looked, it seems to me that the output of a Phat Cat is supposed to be less than a PG. Is their graphic wrong? They don't give you numbers.

I've had a phat cat/PG combo in an Epi before. The middle position was the best. I love p90 neck/humbucker setups. I would just play with pickup height a bit. I think I had A5s in the phat cat

What's normally in a Phat Cat? How did the A5 change it? I'll admit I know next to nothing about the whole magnet topic.

I had a '59 in the bridge with a Phat Cat in the neck of my PRS SE Nick Catanese. I think it was a great combo. I don't think the Phat Cat overpowered the PAF-y bridge pickup. I'm sure it will be fine with the Pearly Gates.

The Phat Cat is one of my favorite neck pickups.

Alnico 2.

Alnico 5 would give a little "pop" to the treble, perhaps decrease the mids a touch, and give the bass a little boost.

If you want to pair a Phat Cat neck with a PGb I think that would be fine. Tom Scholz used to have a neck P90 and bridge Super Distortion in his Les Paul that he played onstage and recorded the Boston albums with. The Super Distortion has a much higher output than a PGb.

But the Phat Cat will hum and the PGb won't.

So when you switch to the neck pickup you'll get some hum because it's a single coil, not a humbucker.

If it was me, I'd just go for a set of PG's...neck and bridge. I have that set in one guitar.

Or a set of Seth Lovers. I have them in two guitars.

The Phat Cat and Custom Custom are both Alnico 2. Every position will sound good, the Phat Cat blends well with any pickup, ekspecially PAFs. The Custom Custom has the right amount of output to where it will sound full on its own instead of weak and shrill like a vintage output pup. Will also make each pickup sit at around the same height. The Phat Cat is quiet when playing clean but can hum with distortion.

On the Phat Cat's defense, I personally don't think the hum is THAT bad. It's supposed to be a bit quieter than standard P90's because of the metal casing, I think. I run an ISP Decimator for my high-gain tone, and I don't even have to adjust it from where I have it set for humbuckers to take care of the Phat Cat's hum. It does hum if I turn the Decimator off when using high-gain, though.

I have a strat partscaster with a set of Phat Cats that sound fantastic (custom left hand body for right hand) and I have a tele partscaster with an SD P90 Antiquity in the neck and a JB in the bridge. Everything is as it should be. Phat Cats are an excellent choice.
