Phat Cats under OD?

I'm in love with the single-coil sound under heavy overdrive (Yngwie style :) ) for solo doom. :laugh2:

So I was wondering, since so many of you dudes dig the Phat Cats, are you using them clean, gritty, or high-OD? Basically, I want to know if it will have the richness of a single-coil with the sustain and thickness of a humbucker under gain.

Also, how do they react to rising volumes? I've noticed that Single-Coils tend to get a really nice punch to them and humbuckers get fatter. Is this pickup a sort of "best of both worlds" P90?

Re: Phat Cats under OD?

The PC's are plenty fat sounding and big and punchy at most volume levels. They're damn near humbuckers if you ask me. But then, to me, that's the description of a p90 in general. They will overdrive a tube amp nicely.

Keep in mind that I have little appreciation for the musical references you listed, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I'd like to know as much about these pickups myself. I just installed a set of Lindy Fralin's Blues Special's in my Tele and came to the realization that this kind of pickup (big single coil, so to say) brings out the best from my amp and from me. I've got a swamp ash Les Paul Studio that I was considering putting the Phat Cat's in. I'm using a Peavey Classic 30 and humbuckers seem a bit much for this amp, even though I'm using a Weber housed in a seperate cabinet as the main.

I have a set in a strat and got a lot of feedback under gain. So much so I'm replacing them.

Are they 4-conductor?

I use mine with a Maxon OD-808, Maxon OD-9 or an Analogman modified Ibanez TS-9. They work GREAT with overdrive!

Aren't those Fralin Blues Specials awesome? I use 'em in my '54 Tele. I think the Phat Cats are nicer than the Harmonic Design Z90...that's the only other P90 in a humbucker size pickup I've owned. The Phat Cats sound more like a real P90...the HD Z90's are extremely cool too, but don't sound like a P90 to me. They sound more like some kind of huge Strat pickup! Lew

I love mine in a ll situations. I have the set in an Epi Sheraton and I love the cleans, especially from the neck. Very, very rich sounding.

Re: Phat Cats under OD?

I have a Phat Cat neck pickup paired with a JD Tele lead in an ash Tele with rosewood fingerboard. I don't play high gain, but clean or overdriven the Phat Cat lives up to its name. It is as fat sounding as a humbucker, perhaps more so than some P90s I've heard (including SDs). The Phat Cat has great clarity and cut as well as punch, and is hum-cancelling when combined with the JD or the Phat Cat bridge pickup.

Re: Phat Cats under OD?

The Phat Cat is fine for high gain. It sounds pretty wicked through this SLO-100. The output's about the same as the Antiquity humbucker (8.5 kohm), but its a more aggressive tone. More cut, and a clear low end. They're both great, and I'm keeping the Antiquity in case I want to switch back to a smoother, vintage PAF sound. (I reserve my right to be fickle....)
