Phil jones bass briefcase?

Re: Phil jones bass briefcase?

The PJB micro amps are reputed to be very good. Placement within the room is important.

I use a tc electronic head and vertical 2x10 set-up. For a joke, I decided to try my old Marshall DBS 7210 cabinet turned on its edge. This seemed to improve the low end response compared to the same cab positioned normally.

Re: Phil jones bass briefcase?

I've used a PJB Briefcase for about four years now (and am a PJB endorsing artist). Their stuff is awesome.

Like Funkfingers said, placement in a room is going to really help the Briefcase get some more lower end tone, but the sound as-is is very nice; it's tight and punchy with a very focused bottom end. While I wouldn't take this on a full band gig (I have a larger PJB rig for that), the volume and handling of the Briefcase is leagues ahead of anything else in its class.

My main gigs are small combo groups, studio work and musical theatre pits and the Briefcase is probably the perfect amp for all of those situations. The only other contender that I use on occasion is the PJB Double Four.

The biggest drawback to most players is probably going to be the price. You can get decent small bass amps for a lot less.

A lot of people balk at the price and figure that for the wattage handling, it should be much cheaper. Then when you have the chance to actually plug one in and PLAY IT, then you understand the price. Unlike most of the other bass amps on the market which are just speakers thrown in a box, Phil designs all of his products from the ground up. There's a lot more thought involved.

But better, small amps for less? Having played a number of them, unless we're talking about the Bass Cub or Double Four (both PJB amps that have the same specs but are a bit less), I will politely disagree. The GK MB150 comes close, but unless you want the GK sound, it doesn't work.

One of my bass heroes, the late Bob Babbitt, was an early Phil Jones endorser.

Whilst I'm far from being a bass player, I got a briefcase because whilst it may not be loud enough in it's own right for many gigs, it's got a D.I out, excellent EQ and what I can only describe as a real pro studio quality sound! Also, my electro acoustic sounds phenomenal through it too.

You confirmed the price is a turn-off to many players. What I said about other small amps wasn't that they were better, or even as good, but cheaper. For average home practice use, they'd be okay. Most bassists aren't even going to think about gigging with two 5" speakers.

Yeah, there's no doubt; PJB stuff is not only more expensive than many things out there but also hard to find to be able to play it. Phil's still sold a ton of the Briefcase though, so what's that tell you?

There are plenty of musicians that gig with Phil's 5" speakers that it's a non-issue; Ginormous already posted one guy, and I think he had a couple hits. I use the PJB Double Four all the time, and it's two 4" speakers, each with their own power amp. It holds up in a 35 piece orchestra pit, and that one is only 75w.
