PI position... low or high gain? Balanced?

Re: PI position... low or high gain? Balanced?

I use a JJ ECC83S in my PI slot.

Made it clearer and grind'ier'.

Re: PI position... low or high gain? Balanced?

This question has been debated many, many, too many times.
It's not my wish to start it all up again- but I will say that I prefer a long-plate, balanced PI in my amps.
Dr Z tends to put the GT 12ax7R2 in most of his amps. I forgot exactly which mfg makes it before GT relabels them.
I have also had good luck with a balanced GT12ax7M.
I have a few NOS long-plate JAN Philips 12ax7's that work well in the PI position.
The main thing for a PI is to have a good tube that can handle alot of current- the JJecc83 (GTEcc83S) also tests well in that area.
Watford is a world renowned/respected tube dealer- if that tube has been recommended to you, I don't think you can go wrong with their advice.

Mhmm I have 2 of these, a EH 12AX7 and loads of random brands...

So I think I'll go for the EH in V1 (low gain), JJ in V2 (I use mostly a clean sound), JJ in PI and some random thing for the boost. Thanks!
