Pick-up Suggestions

Good afternoon!

Recently I just purchased a vintage 1965 Gibson Melody Maker. While the guitar is fun to play, the pick-up lacks balls, tone and feedsback like a mic next to a P.A. speaker. The body is ultra-thin cherry (aka SG style), and the pick-up size is very similar to a Strat. I don't want to alter the body or pickgaurd in anyway but do want to place a new pick-up and potentiometers into her.

The style of music I play ranges from blues, Texas-swang, classic rock and fusion. Although I am looking at using this guitar more for the blues-classic rock (Keith Richards tone) than anything else.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks!

Re: Pick-up Suggestions

The guitarist I work with has a mid-late 60s Melodymaker but it has been modified so that the bridge single is in the middle and it has a CC in the bridge position now. It's a very cool sounding guitar to be sure.

Those old Gibson singles are an odd size and I don't know that anyone is making them after-market but the original pickups can be rewound to almost any spec at the SD factory.

Re: Pick-up Suggestions

Robert's correct. Give MJ a ring/email at the SD factory and she can hook you up.

Re: Pick-up Suggestions

Also, having it rewound rather than replacing it will be better for its resale value if you care about that.

Re: Pick-up Suggestions

I recall SD mentions in the faq on the site that he loves the melodymaker pickups stock.

just weird... no one seems to like em
