Pick-up suggestions

I have 2 Ibanez RGT42DXFMs and I want to replace the stock pups. The guitars are maple neck-through with mahogany wings. The stock pups are a little to dark and don't clean up well when the volume is backed off.I play all rock from the late 60's through today and a little blues.I've tried the Tone Wizard but, want some input from people that use these pups on a daily basis. What's everyone think?

Hello Steven and welcome to the board!
There are many choices to get.Screaming Demon nad JB would be cool for ya.MAybe A custom too.
I don't know how much gain would you need ,if you are not going to stick with ultra high gain ,a Pearly Gates set will be pleasing to your ears i think.

Re: Pick-up suggestions

I like to have plenty of gain,I forgot to mention that I play some metal too.

Ok ,there is no PU to cover everything!!!
I love the Distortion and the PATB-2 for high gain ,and tehy do clean as well. The custom is really great PU ,more defined tone but tame at the harmonic side.JB is an allrounder ,and i am not a fan of it.Those are your PU possibilities ,they all are on the brighter side ,and have lots of midds.

Cool.Thanks.I'm familiar with the Sreamin' Demon and the JB(somewhat) but,wat about the Full Shred?

Re: Pick-up suggestions

I think a JB would work best for this, hands down. Use a 250k pot.

Put a JB in the bridge of 1 and put a screamin' demon in the other.

Pair a jazz in the neck with the JB and pair a Alnico 2 pro in the neck with the screamin' demon.

Would a Custom5(b) and '59(n) be good in those guitars?

The 59 yes, the C5 is going to be on the bright side of things most likely. If you want a brighter bridge pickup, go for it. The Full Shred is on the brighter side also but, to me the C5 has more percived brightness. BTW, the Full Shred is a good choice and so is the 59 neck. I would say the Custom/59 will be your safest bet since you like Classic rock to metal to blues.

BTW, you say it is dark but, Ibanez pickups usually sound like a bag full of A$$ so, that probally explains things. LOL!

Re: Pick-up suggestions

Ok,I just spent some time with my ear on the upper horn of my axe(my neck hurts) listening to the natural sound of my guitar, actually I did this with both of my guitars. They both have a fairly balanced tone, one is slightly, and I mean slightly darker than the other, they both have a tiny bit of that overdrive pedal kind of mids to them but its a very small amount.Over all the natural sound of both guitars is balanced and kind of piano like.I'm considering a Sreamin' Demon or a Custom, maybe one of each.I'm also thinking about swapping either pickups magnet for an A8.Whats everybody think?

Re: Pick-up suggestions

What type of amp(s) will you be running through? I ask because my JB sounds great through my older Hiwatt and Fender , but only OK through a JCM 900, whichis, at the moment, my main gigging amp.

On the amps that it sounds good on, the JB is excellent, and it cleans up nicely. Still, you have plenty of excellent alternatives to the JB, as you will find in the replies! I have a '59 in the neck, and it has a nice buttery tone. A Phat Cat might also work well for you in the neck; I've found that P 90 style pups (which the Phat Cat is) in the neck position sound very nice for blues and some older rock soloing.
