Welcome to the forum.

You could probably do well with a set of "yer basic PAF" types: '59, Jazz, Pearly Gates, Seth Lover, etc. A lot of people seem to like the Jazz neck/Custom5 (SH-14) bridge combination in a Les Paul. Pearly Gates pickups are popular as well.

I think the real particulars of getting the right tone for '60's sounding stuff is going to be in the amp/effects combinations.

Howdy,

My tastes ares similar to yours, Steve. My ES-335 has a set of '59s and I'm certainly satisfied. If you do your part, I'm sure the P/Us will do thier part. Good luck!

... a lot of 1960s rock, garage and fuzzed-out psychedelica was played on guitars w/ single coil/P90-style pickups - Strats, Teles, Ampeg/Burns solidbodies, Epiphone Casinos, Gretsches, Hagstroms, Rickenbackers, Voxes, et al. So you may also want to look into humbucker-sized P90/Gretsch Filtertron-sounding pickups for that classic '60s-era twang tone... :D

Just a suggestion... ;)

The '59 set does Clapton and Page stuff wonderfully. There is a Page pup set made by the SD custom shop, it's like a tad hotter '59 set.

If you want to cop the old Page and Clapton tone, a pair of bridge model 59's would be the ticket.

A pair of '59's with one qualifier: if you're sensitive to bass, the JazzN has a bit less low end. I have no problem with '59N's in a LP, but some guys do.

If you want a bridge PU that you can push into overdrive easily for solos, the C5 is a good bet, plus it sounds good clean.

Yeah, I think '59s are what you for that particular guitar. I also prefer the Jazz in the neck as opposed to the '59. The Jazz is too modern sounding for some, although it doesn't bother me (and I prefer vintage style pickups).

I was gonna suggest 59s but I think that point has kinda been driven home by now
maybe a 59 in the bridge and a phat cat in the neck would offer some extra flavor to yer groovalicious psychadelic funkability

I'm going to vote for the Seth Lover. The '59 & Pearly Gates are also good pickups but I prefer the Seth Lover.

I have tried a lot of paf types and can highly recommend:

pair of antiquities
- Seths
- Pearly Gates
'59 B with APII Neck
'59 B with PG neck

I am one of those that doesn't like A5 magnets in the neck of a Les Paul.

you can't go wrong with a PAF-style pickup...that's what they used in those days anyway.
