Pickguard making advice needed!

Hi all,

I am looking to make a mirror pickguard for my old LTD Viper. Unlike a few current models this one doesn't have a pickguard to begin with, and as they don't appear to be as readily available as say Fender pickguards I feel I may as well get a blank into shape and take it from there.

That said, I have limited space where I live and a lack of big power tools. Looking at some tutorials a lot of people seem to prefer using routers and all sorts, but I am tempted to get a dremel or something similar. Would that do the job? Essentially I am thinking about cutting it towards the right shape, then sanding the edges down to complete.

As I haven't done this before I thought I would check just in case there are any obvious issues which I would be likely to encounter!

Thanks in advance!

I suspect this would be a lot easier to do with a router.

There are a lot of 'tool libraries' that have popped up in Canada over the past 10 years, places you can go and borrow tools for short periods of times when you need them for a small project like this. London is bound to have something similar.

Incidentally I am going to ask about just in case, for instance my girlfriend's Dad has a massive barn loaded with all sorts so I wouldn't be surprised if he has one! He is not local though. Ultimately if it is more likely to result in a better finished product I would opt for a router - if I can find one. I highlighted something like a dremel as that is something I can then sort myself.

Yeah, I don't think a dermal is going to cut it, no pun intended! Try & get your hands on a router or @ the very least a scroll saw, it will probably be the difference between buying 2 or 3 blanks for practice, or 10? If it's your first you may want to stick with single ply, this way there's no angles and stuff to contend with?

Thanks, plus good pun! I want to do a mirror pickguard. If thickness means I need to do angles I will cross that bridge. As it is for my LTD Viper (an SG type shape) it won't be a big guard. Anyway, if there are any other suggestions please give me a shout. In the mean time I shall look for a router!
