Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

There are some good choices, and I voted for a few of them. I've got an A2 Pro Humbucker bridge in my little Epiphone LP100, and it's a bang-on Guns N Roses sound to my ears. I think it's great for any raunchy rock n' roll sound that uses more than a little gain but isn't in metal territory.

Anything PAF-ish with an Alnico 2 magnet should be close, though.

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

Pg is full of win and covers a lot of ground. A2Pros would work well for a lot of those tones. Haven't tried Seths but they would likely be a good choice.

BUT except for the top am looking for that Slash/Perry tone, billy can wait......

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

PGs can do raunchy classic rock as well. PGs are bright and not as warm as a2pros. a2pros are smooth and buttery, PGs have a bite to them. Both are excellent pups.

I don't play a lot of Aerosmith-like material, but I think so. When I listen to those Classics Live records, I picture that pickup being able to pull it off.

I have a PGb,, I swapped out the A2 for a polished UOA5 and wouldn`t change it back to save my soul. Much more Billy esque and better punch and growl.

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

The Burstbucker 3 is sort of like a less bright PG.
Fat and snarly, yet pretty good clean.

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

Wait, so a 59 neck is muddy in a LP?

Some players think so, while many think it's just right. My issue is that it gives me this droning, one-notish "kazoo" tone no matter what I do with it in the neck. It's a cool sound, but I can't get anything else out of it. Maybe it's me. I like it a lot better with an A2 magnet; that seems to relieve the congestion and get it breathing normally.

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

I always hate these "I want to do GnR to ZZ top" posts.

CAN'T BE DONE: Two TOTALLY different tones.

At best - PG bridge, A2P neck. That will indeed give you a range of tones, and the tones of both.

I say get the PG's. You can always turn the treble down with the tone knob, but you can't add treble that isn't there to an A2P.

By the way - I have a couple of 70's LP's. I wouldn't use T-tops for zepp.

I don't have the urge of sound just like billy, but aren't t tops page pickups since 1975 i know his others pickups were basically burstbuckers 2 with A3,but really?

Re: Picking "bridge" for a les paul!

In 1975, there were no Duncans period to the best of my knowledge. I doubt page was using them. And he was most likely playing a 59-ish Gibson A5 PAF - with all sorts of funky wiring.

The thing is, when people want this mega-range of sounds, they are going to fail on one side or the other. Slash is pretty distinctive at one end of the spectrum, Aerosmith very distinctive at the other end. In fact, a lot of Aerosmith was Strats and Teles and whatever....not even PAF's.

My general advice: Always get a pickup with more treble. You can turn it down. An A2P will only have so many highs to start with.

A 59 might be a good compromise between the two (and my choice for Page). But again - if a Les Paul...it may be a tad boomy in the neck - depending on the guitar.

So I'd almost always go PG in the neck. However - there won't be Slash coming from that even if you turn it down.

And pages other bucker were not basically burstbuckers. Again - no such thing at the time. I dig the assortment of BB's 1-3. But none of those are 59's - which is what i would considert the most "Page style" pup duncan makes.

And - a pair of 59's is a very nice set of pickups and very flexible.

For the record - my most "SLASH" sounding sounds are using my 79 T-Top in the neck.
