Picks

No, I'm not going to ask what kind of pick you guys use. I'm talking about a certain pick: The Dunlop Jazz 3.

What's the difference between the old school ones, and the new ones?

I saw a Shawn Lane interview, and he said that Dunlop changed the formula on the Jazz 3 picks. That was during the 90's, so I dunno about now. Then I read about this new Eric Johnson pick that is supposed to replicate a vintage Jazz 3, so WTF0rz?

I also noticed that Dunlop changed the formula on the Tortex since I started using them.

So, wtf?

Let's talk about it. I know some old fart on here will chime in with the answer, so feel free to chime in.

And, you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your friends nose.

As well, I can play my nose -- I can pick it or blow it (drum roll, please)

Re: Picks

From what I have read about these picks, the red ones are most like the old ones. The black ones are a little different. I have some of both and cannot tell any difference.

Re: Picks

The black Jazz III's I used to buy 3-4 years ago definitely had a different texture to them than the ones they sell today - they were way easier to hold! The newer material is closer to the reds.

The Tortex and Black/Gold JIII's are the best, IMO, though. The nylon ones feel/sound like playing with poker chips or something.

Re: Picks

I've read in a GuitarOne magazine article from awhile ago about jazz III's, that Eric Johnson said that the older Jazz III's (which he has laser printed for him personally until they recently came out with the Eric Johnson Jazz III's) are slightly thinner in thickness than the red picks that are out now. So they are slightly more flexible, which gives it a different tone.
