pickup change in Ibanez strat

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

I always get nervous when screwing with stuff , and don't trust my hands with something like this , mainly due to my guitar being hard to get (the shop I bought it from only had that one) here. It has been replaced now by ibanez and the new model (for all I know) only has a natural finish which isnt really my thing (plus is an extra 130 than what I paid). I don't wanna screw up a guitar I spent weeks working and saving to get my hands on y'know , but I do have a crappy les paul copy i could use ..... well I could get the pickups put in by the tech for my strat and then practice soldering .... thus leading to me being able to have nice sound while learning how to change it ....hmmmm

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

Currently I have these in my RG:-

Black Winters modified with:
-regular size ceramic magnets, which should make it tonally in between a JB and Distortion (orginal BW came with 3 large ceramics)
-regular screws replaced with hex screws so that it has more attack and punch.

The cleans are actually good and with a mild OD they sounded great for blues. Very versatile. Middle pickup is a Dimarzio True velvet bridge.

The original Black Winters are too bright for the guitar though, and I have also tried EMG 57/66, Norton/Air Classic, Titan set, ToneZone/Air Classic but prefer the current set.

Good luck!

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

I should really say this now, it doesn't have to be SD pickups in the end, I know we are on the SD forum nd all up if you know of a bridge or neck pickup that would do what I ask (or fill most of the criteria) then say it even if it is something like Dimarzio or Bare Knuckle or something else!

That is why you see multiple recommendations of the Super Distortion

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

Know any good demos of the pickup? / Could link me some? The only ones I have found are not the best. I know it will sound different on every guitar but hey getting an impression would be helpful!

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

Know.anything.about the gravity storm or the evolution?

I don't know on the Gravity Storm, other than that it's a DiMarzio pup designed for/by Steve Vai.

The Evolutiuons I do know. DP158, DP159 and ISCV2. As they're all in my JEM. Great pups, but agressive. The DP158 (neck) has a nice dark tone, the DP159 (bridge) is more bright and tight. The ICSV2 I don't use often, but it can hang with the humbuckers. A little 'duck quack' when selected with bridge or neck, but not overly present.

I wouldn't know how they sound in an S, however. In an RG they'd be fine, as the JEM is an RG derivate.

I don't have any bright issues in my S with the stock Black Winters. But then again, it's a mahogany body with maple top, not basswood as most RG's...

Re: pickup change in Ibanez strat

I have an old single-conductor Super Distortion in my mahogany Les Paul ripoff. Sounds great !

<edit>

Oh wait, I see I already posted that... :grumble:

After learning Kurt Cobain used a super distortion has made me consider it more now as that thing got aggresssive but cleaned up well. I really want that aggressive nature that you can find in grunge bands , I just love that sound .
