Pickup Covers

What kind of impact does adding covers to your pickups cause? Does it alter the PUP strength? Does it alter tone? Any thing sonically it will contribute?

Thanks

Re: Pickup Covers

metal ones spread out the magnetic field which makes things sound fatter to many people's ears.

Plastic ones do nothing ;)

Re: Pickup Covers

Covers also provide better shielding & reduce noise. Without them, HB's have slightly more treble, but since I like warm tones, I have covers on all my HB's. Besides, open coil PU's look kind of cheap.

Re: Pickup Covers

Howdy,

I tend to agree with Blueman335. The SD '59s on my Gibson ES-335 happen to be uncovered, but only because they came that way! I prefer the look of covered HBers, especially on a 335. For some reason, uncovered HBers look acceptable, even businesslike on a Les Paul. But on an ES-335? It looks just plain strange. YMMV.
