Pickup cutouts on jem

i have an ibanez jem7v with dimarzio evolution pickup set (stock) and ive noticed that some days i play and the middle pickup a single coil is so quiet that its not even usable, it didnt seem quite right but anyway i ignored it and didnt use the pickup.

about a day later i plugged it in again to find that the middle pickup was now working fine and giving out a lot more output, i thought it was strange so i guessed there was a problem, i played with the tone knobs and the switch but nothing seems to get the guitar to lose power.

i decided to check the inside of the guitar and everything looked pretty fine so i put it back together and the middle pickup sounded ok.

about 10 minutes ago i plugged in the jem to have again no middle pickup output (or very very little), so i shaked the guitar in the air for about five seconds and now the pickup is working again.

what could this be? possibly somethig wrong with the soldering or earthing of the pickup? i honestly have no idea, well i hope someone can help

thanks

Ryan

Re: Pickup cutouts on jem

i hope the pickup is ok, my jem is old and one of the first of the Jem7VWH and worth quite a bit, they dont sell evolution single coils (well they arent on the dimarzio website). im going to swap the scratch plate for a new one fitted with all duncans and put the original somewhere safe, il re solder the joints to see if thats gonna help, if it is a bad pickup does anyone know where i can get hold of a Dimarzio evolution single coil?

Re: Pickup cutouts on jem

I can think in two things...

1) A dirty switch: you could shake it up and down from position 1 to 5. That helps to remove some dirt.

2) An "almost" broken conector: Sometimes the conectors are about to broke and make things like that. Check for that or... Pull gently from the conetor, if is almost broken it will definetly brake...

There actually isnt a Evolution single coil. The singles coils are called the Jem single coil and from my understanding they are a tweaked HS-2 to match either the PAF Pros, Breeds or Evo's. Supposedly its not available direct from DiMarzio but you can get it through Ibanez. That being said though over time I've owned 4 different Jems and I would swear that its an HS-2 if it has been tweaked its not much.
