Pickup dilema

I have a MIA Peavey Predator with a pickguard with only bridge and neck slots. I have a Custom/Custom in the bridge and the stock bridge pickup in the neck.

I absolutely love the Custom/Custom, but I'm having trouble deciding what to put in the neck. I've been leaning toward the Classic Stack or a Cool Rails, but I haven't messed around with different pickups to know which one would work best.

I know I don't want something too hot in the neck with a CC in the bridge, and I'll be the first to admit my knowledge of pickups is VERY small. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Pickup dilema

I can't imagine you'll be happy with the cool rails if you like the CC. They are bland, not warm, not fish nor meat.

This is a tremolo guitar? Try a Jazz. The Jazz really wakes up and becomes a shiny, warm thing in a tremolo guitar, not as dead as in a LP. I think it will match your CC perfectly.

In any case, there's no real way to give good advice on these questions. The pattern on this forum is that the people who tried the most pickups agree least on what is good for what. The Jazz has the advantage of being cheap and common on Ebay. I'd get one, try it and if you don't like it flip it.

Single coil slot, right?

I will vote Little '59.

I have one in my Squier '51 (strat body, tele neck, HS config) and it's exactly what the doctor ordered. Check it out here:

Re: Pickup dilema

I can't watch vids out here, what kind of sound does the little '59 have?

Re: Pickup dilema

Matt,

It's really just going to come down to you deciding to two things.

1. Do you want a single coil or a bucker sound in the neck position

2. If you want a single coil sound in the neck do you have to have noiseless

If you want a bucker sound then get the lil 59 and be done with it. It's going to give you a classic humbucker kind of tone that's going to be pretty warm, but open sounding.

If you want a single coil sound with no hum then the stacks are going to be the way to go. Classic for a chimier sound, and hot stack for a thicker meaner sound.

If you don't mind the noise then consider a one of the Ants or an OC Duff. I put Duffs in my superstrat and they are great.

Thanks for the info Luke.

I think I'm going to look into the hot stack.

Re: Pickup dilema

single coil? Go for the Lace Holy Grail, one of the best sounding single coils (I know it's not technically a single coil but shut up) I've ever heard.
