Pickup for 8-string lap steel

I recently acquired an 8-string lap steel with a reasonable, but not great pickup (a 6-string with a magnetic bar glued to the top). What sort of SD pup would give something similar to an alt-country pedal steel sound (think Wilco or Uncle Tupelo, etc.) through a Twin Reverb or similar style of amp?

String spacing is 5/16" and the cutout for the present p/u is about 2.75" x 0.7" (rounded ends).

welcome to the forum!!

im sure you could have a single coil special wound to fit those specs. a blade type single coil sized pup might work well but a strat pup is longer than 2.75", the width is about right but you need about 3" to fit a cool rails or something similar. are you opposed to making the hole a touch wider to fit a common sized pup?
