pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

so i take it that will help a lot for what i'm looking for, the JB's edge plus more low end?, cuz thats what I want. raw aggression with a nice bottom end, not too boomy, cuz to me the custom sounds a little bit boomy and not enough edge for this LP

i'm sorry, a DDN is that a duncan distortion neck? with an alnico 8 you mean?

yes, sorry, a DDn is a distortion neck model; it was previously known as the Seymouriser II. it's wound somewhere between the custom and the screamin demon, and has a similar edge to the highs as the JB but isn't as focused as the custom.
it's a very balanced wind put does come with an over-sized ceramic mag as stock, which may or may not be too hard-hitting for you, depending on taste

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

I have a 78 LP custom silverburst. the guitar is pretty dark sounding naturally. i just put in a duncan custom but it sounds a bit too bassy and not enough edgyness to it. I was maybe thinking of switching it for a jb? would the the JB's edgyness and highs balance out nicely for this guitar? I need suggestions. oh and i'm pretty new here on the forum..

If the DC is too bassy then the C5 won't do any good.

The 78 is a nice brightish but full humbucker.

The JB is purely a matter of taste, I think it's impossible to predict whether it's doing any good here. The flubby bass might be much worse in a dark Norlin but then maybe you don't have bad bass, just lack of highs.

What do you play, anyway?

I play mostly aggressive sounding music like Tool, alice in chains, soundgarden and some classic rock as well like, led zeppelin, black sabbath, I also really like the heavy, dark blues, rock n roll.

If it is bass you may be correct but, alot of folks confuse darkness with bass. In this case, I am about 95% sure the Custom 5 will cure the problem. It always works in a dark LP or dark guitars in general.

Custom 5 in that guitar, perfect.

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

I think the JB can have a very tight low end in the right guitar. I also think most LPs sound great, and might I say better with a 300K volume pot in the bridge - warmer, thicker!

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

does anyone know what pickups came stock in that guitar?

I would like to know also-I have an '80 Silverburst but I don't know if i want to mess with the bridge pickup. I had the treble bleed mod done to the neck pickup and that helped-I still don't use the neck pickup alone much, but the combo with the bridge on 10 and roll of the volume on the neck makes nice sounds. The bridge pickup is just fat on that guitar-nothing else I own gets that sound. It's a bit darker than the JB's in my other guitars but plug it into a Marshall and nothing touches it.

Why not open it and look underneath? Probably the guitar is fat sounding...not just the pickup! Maybe its a Rio BBQ.:1:

No-bought it new in '80 so it's stock. I took it amp shopping and liked it with every amp I played-Oranges, a Hiwatt- okay, I take that back, a couple Marshall clones didn't do anything for me but they were non master-volume and at store volumes, meh. The Custom 5 has me wondering what it would sound like in comparison. I would like to know what the stock pickups were back then-chrome cover, looks standard paf'ish.

i think go with your first instinct and try a JB. i prefer the JB to the SH-5 and the C5; it's still thick but definitely has the edge you're looking for.

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

I am going to be comparing the JB to the Rio Grande BBQ shortly and will let you know.

I was going to order a Motor City Torque pickup which is like 14.5K alnico 5......but I figure I should be able to get what I want with one of these.

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

i'm not saying the duncan custom is a bad pickup, it just doesn't have the edge of a jb, if only the jb had more low end . the Custom also doesn't have the great harmonic pinches you can pull off with a jb. if only you can mix the two...

I think that fact about the low end makes it a perfect match for an LP. LPs have loads of low end!

The JB has low end, it is just loose as hell in most guitars. A LP does not do the JB justice in most cases.

you can - a custom and JB make a good hybrid, and the DD, DDn, C5 and demon are all between the 2 extremes tonally IMO
you have some reading to do i would think

Re: pickup for a dark sounding LP custom??

That's odd, so many of the players I love have used JBs in many of their guitars and they get a nice tight tone.

Personally, I do find something like the Rio Grande BBQ like a warmer and tighter JB though.
