That's a metal pickup with a characteristic high-pitched scream. You can call it bright, but it's still a metal pickup. BTW, I just went through one in my SG and that sounds really good, even outside of metal.

BTW, I think 75lp has found he doesn't actually need a bright pickup.

I agree with Theodie. Everything you're describing leans toward the Custom 5. You just loosen the 4 brass bolts on the bottom of the pickup, break the wax seal, and push the magnet out a bit. Then grip it on the other end with pliers lined with cardboard (so you don't chip the magnet), and put the A5 magnet in....with the polarity facing the same end.

Besides the problem of the JB's soft bottom - it's the nasally midrange you'll get when combined with mahogany.....even with the A8.

Try the C5 next. It'll probably solve the problem because the bottom is tight, the mids let the mahogany do the talking, and the highs punch through clearer than the slightly compressed Custom.

IMO, if your Les Paul is that dark, upgrade the pots to CTS 500K's. I had the stock pots in my 1986 Les Paul Custom, and the guitar was muddy and dark as hell, no matter what pickups I tried- JB, PAF, Tone Zone, Evolution. I upgraded all the electronics to EMG's (now Blackouts), with new pots and the difference was night and day
