Hey,

i know jon schaffer uses les paul for rhythm and strat for clean.
Gibson stock or wcr or SDs on 'Stand alone' (bkp wasnt established then)?
Or any other ideas...

I could imagine a SH-8 on 'Disciples of the Lie'

Greetings and Merry Christmas!

From a 2007 interview:

"I have been using amplifiers custom made for me by Larry Grohmann for about 15 years now...I did however use several different amps on both parts of the 'Something Wicked' epic...I used a great amp for all of my lead parts called a Splawn Quick Rod.

Another hugely important element is the choice of pickups for my guitars. Besides stock Gibson pups, which are often great just the way the are, I really love Jim Wagner pickups, especially the Goodwood set and the Bet set, but they all rock. I also really dig several sets that Tim Mills of Bare Knuckle Pickups has developed, namely the Black Dog and the Riff Raff being among my favorite but they're all great as well; it depends what you're looking for. Then, of course, I have a few Seymour Duncan pups in a few of my axes. I have an SG Supreme with a Dimebucker in it that is a smokin' combination.

I've been using D'Addarrio strings for 20 years now. .13 - .56 is my gauge normally. I use 12's for my lead work and 11's on my Strats"

Schaffer has also said in older interviews that he recorded with Gibsons on all of the early records and that the LP was his guitar of choice. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say stock LP pickups, probably 490R & 498T. If you look at his pickup choices, most are in the medium to medium-high output range and not super hot.

The sound you hear on the album is 3% huge strings, 7% pickups, 50% amp and 40% studio magic (mics, cabs, processing, etc)!

When I think of his tone it's not really his pickups as much as a parametric EQ. I think his playing style was heavily influenced by Metallica's Master of Puppets and Justice For All tones which you can get with just about any decent pickup and a parametric EQ.

Yes, Yes, Yes! (i really like this forum, more than others ;-p)
True, everyhing you said!.. I would add 'compression' (maybe done by a high output pup) for Track 3 of that record..
But true, it must be amp and the equalizer thing, since he is more into medium output.

A parametric EQ is great because you not only boost/cut a frequency but you control how wide a range of neighboring frequencies are affected by using the Q control. If you put a parametric EQ in your amps effects loop and give the bass a wide boost around 125hz and a narrow boost at 2.5khz with a wide but shallow cut around 500hz you can get that kind of tone. By hollowing out the midrange the guitar tone fits tight with the bass and drums while leaving space in the middle for vocals and lead guitarist. It really accentuates palm muting but you need a little bit of peak limiting so it doesn't sound choppy.

Re: Pickup for particular song: 'Stand alone' - Iced Earth

Hi, that means, i Hope i got that right, that:
A graphical equalizer that has 2k amplified will influence e.g. 8k, making it more sensitive...
A parametric equalizer would not make 8k more sensitive since one frequency setting is always(with respect to Q^^) isolated from the other...

Is that correct?

Knowing what I know about Ived earth - I was gonna say the most important pup is actually the amp. But you guys were all over that. Carry on....

The last time I saw them, Schaefer was using a Roland JC-120.
