Pickup height too low will cause?

Hello all,
What effect does a pickup set too low have on tone? I'm hearing some weird, spikey dirty sounds coming from 2 out of 3 guitars, and it seems that the 2 guitars that aren't sounding right have the pickups fairly low away from the strings. The worst of the 2 is my Floyd equipped Washburn V that I have a Franky p/u in. The other is my Warmoth Iceman, PG. Much more noticably when I crank it up, almost like a coarse clipping, the total opposite of smooth. I have pulled everything out of the chain and tried 2 different cabs, and different cables. Thanks

Re: Pickup height too low will cause?

Pickup height set too low could cause quietness.

Words such as too low and too high are subjective. Please post some measurements of the distances between your guitar strings and each of the "offending" pickups.

I have my 59n almost a 1/4 of an inch away from the strings, no noise or weirdness happening.

The closer the pickups are to the strings, the more overall lows and highs, stronger overall output...Set too close, you could lose note clarity,(string pull with single coils)and a muddy tone and weird sounding out of tune notes...

Humbuckers are more forgiving and can be set as close as 1/16" from the bottom of the E strings to the top of the screws...I usually prefer my pickups a bit lower, especially the neck position one..

I have my main axe wired with jackson j-50BC that sits a good quarter inch from the strings and Super distortion on the neck that's as low as it can go without falling off. I do have an onboard midboost(jackson j-1000) on the guitar, but this is the best sound I've managed to wringe out of it so far!
