Pickup pairings and related questions

Hi, i am looking for some new pickups and i have kind of decided on getting some Irongears from the UK (where i live).

They are for a Mahogany Les Paul.

I was thinking hot slag for bridge and rolling mill for neck.

I play a lot of metal but also like to have some nice clean sounds available.

My questions are: Will having one pickup covered (neck) and one pickup open (bridge) cause any abnormalities in tone?

and, is it important to get similar output pickups in both bridge and neck? why? what dfference does it make etc?

its just the hot slag is 16k and the rolling mills neck is like 9k.

oh and one other thing, is there a good reasonmost metal bands used uncovered pickups? (not including active pickups)

thanks

Re: Pickup pairings and related questions

having one pup covered and one not covered is fine, ive done it, jimmy page has done it and so have lots of other people. taking the cover off may give you a touch more treble than if the cover was on.

you dont need similar output pups but you dont want the neck pup to be stronger than the bridge or you will never get the volumes to balance. a hotter bridge pup is very common. your 16k bridge and 9k neck should match up fine.

ok thanks for that. Its odd, i keep thinking i can hear a difference when i hear covered pickups compared to open but i don't know if its all in my head so to speak. :)
