Pickup recommendation.. I got the H _ H and now i need the S to go in the middle,

So I have a Squier Stagemaster. I recently installed a JB Trembucker in the bridge and Jazz in the neck. I Left the original Squier single coil in the middle.

Well, it doesn't sound so good. The pup alone sound good, but the 2 and 4 position of the 5 way are not so good. There is a large volume drop and they sounds weak. I have already considered the single coil being out of phase and I reversed the wires. The 2 position sounded better, but the 4 position was horrible.

I did some research and maybe the single coil is not strong enough to complete with the SDs? I don't know. I moved the wires all around before soldering them down and I really can't get the pups to work well in those 2 positions. I know there should be a volume drop, but this seems too much...especially when then single coil alone is at same volume as the SDs.

Unless someone has another idea, I am open to recommendations for a new single coil. I'd like some nice cleans in the 2 and 4 position. Dirty sounds are not so important, but I'd like a good match for the JB and the Jazz. Since this is a classic combo, I am hoping that there are some good ideas!!!

Thanks in advance

My recommendation is a single coil sized humbucker...seriously. I love the Lil Screamin Demon in the middle position–turns your HSH into a HHH.

Quarter Pounder is strong enough to play nicely with humbuckers, and it still retains a distinctly singlecoil character. Have had a QP in one of my Floydcasters for ages, with a 59n and a 70s T-top. Works great.

Hey there,
I go with a standard single coil (fender '69) in the middle so that when I use the bridge (ECP 8.5K) with the middle, I almost get a Quack, but really that position gives me a very nice rhythm and lead sound. Same with the neck(TwangBang at 8.5K) and mid, very Hendrixy with the rhythm sounds. I never use the mid alone, but thought I'd mention as I think I am alone in this type of set up. As I only use the bridge and neck alone or with the mid, I get 4 really great sounds. I leave the middle sing.coil set real low so it really makes those 2 and 4 positions unique.

The SD site recommends Custom Staggered Strat - middle rwrp... any thoughts?

If the wind is under 7K, I say good recommendation.

Re: Pickup recommendation.. I got the H _ H and now i need the S to go in the middle,

Are you using some sort of super switch to split the humbuckers in positions 2 & 4? If you are, a split humbucker + a single coil in parallel will sound weaker than 2 coils of a humbucker in series. If not, then a humbucker + a single coil (parallel) can sound weak too, as they are seeing similar parts of the string and there is some phase cancellation there. It all depends on the sound you are after. Do you want Stratish sounds? Are you ok with a little hum? Are you after traditional single coil sounds with just the middle pickup? What kind of music are you playing?
