Pickup Recommendations for a Jaguar HH

:friday:Cheers Guys:friday:

So I'm getting around to pimping out my Main Axe. Fender Classic Player Jaguar HH.

I love this guitar the neck is perfect and the body shape is just me. Buuut the Enforcer Humbuckers are not my cup of tea. They are very "meh" if that's a word. They're like a jack of all trades.

What am I looking for?

I'm one of the guitarists in a count em 1..2..3 guitar band. I'm mostly playing classic lead lines. The word I really want to use is Sing. We're sort of a Hardcore Band but with a lot of Indie Influence (Mewithoutyou, Brand New, The Dear Huner). Delay is used a lot, but not mainly me i stick to a pretty basic tone.

I use a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 on top of an Avatar 4x12 with Vintage 30's (Trying to find the Head Version and also looking into maybe converting the combo into a head). I'm thinking of upgrading to an Orange Dual Terror soon though.

My main thing I'm looking to improve on with these new pickups is even with 6 speakers I feel like I don't cut through as much as I should. Especially when I play rhythm parts I get lost in the mix real easy (and my mids are usually maxxed). No one else has noticed but I have. Like I said before I'm looking for a bridge pickup that will sing but remain a tight sort of twang if that's possible outside of a tele pickup.

Out of my neck I like a nice bright rhythm pickup for cowboy cords, and for my lower gain leads. I actually don't mind the Dragster neck pickup but I figure I should atleast try an SD.

Doing my own research I've though of a set of Phat Cats (I'm worried about the trem spacing though), or a Screamin Demon. Do you guys have any ideas? For reference www.myspace.com/fallingfordaylight

Cowboy cords? My friend sounds like you are looking for single coils there.

BTW Trem spacing isn't all that crucial (at least for me, my normal spaced Pearly Gates works very well in the bridge of my strat).

Re: Pickup Recommendations for a Jaguar HH

For that kind of stuff I too would suggest single coils or a P90 type pickup. Most of those bands use single coils I'm pretty sure for the most part. I had a regular spaced JB in a strat and had no problem with it lining up. I've never put a trembucker in a fender, but I thought I heard a comment that the fender trem. is almost in between the gibson and trembucker spacing.

Hey man,

...I'm guessing you're Mike?

Those classic player jaguars are alright. You might want to check out the Pearly Gates trembucker, as well as the Full Shred. The Full shred in particular tends to lighten things up a bit. the phat cat is a good pickup, look into that...and check if the Stag Mag is your cup of tea.

as for the neck, the Jazz is king of alder-maple guitars. look into the pearly gates neck pickup though if you care to.

look up some demos to see which you like the most:http://www.youtube.com

this sounds like an amplifier issue though.

is everyone in your band using mids?

I play lots of "leads" in my band, and my mids are usually around 5.

because my other guitarist uses alot of mids, i cut through equally.

he uses less volume but more mids, and i use more volume and less mids.

you can hear us both.

look into the EQ you guys use.

general tips many agree on: the bass HAS to have mids in there. a good bass sound has the EQ on the amp with everything at 4-6. its a BASS, not a guitar. its there for UMPH and keeping the backbone of the tune, its supposed to work with the drums.

with that in mind, guitars shouldnt be too bassy.

i see people with the bass on 8 and think to myself, is he trying to be the guitarist AND the bassist? think about it.

I play a Jaguar myself, the Special HH, the black one. I know what those guitars are like.

Let me know if you need any more info.

I run a lot of mids/treble/presence trying to cut through this my EQ:

Pre-Gain: 8.5
Post-Gain: 9
Bass: 6
Mids: 11
Treble: 7
Reverb (When on): 6
Presence: 5

I'm a firm believer of mids. I think a key thing I forgot to mention was that we have three guitarists. One guitarist plays keyboards mainly though.

The other main guitarist Jake runs a Marshall Mg100DFX and he doesn't boost his mids as much but he still uses them. I can get his exact settings today though. I forgot to think about the EQ's that's true. The third guitarist/keyboardist Adam runs a Fender Frontman with a bunch of pedals right now so his tone is pretty digital (He's going to buy my Classic 50 when/if I buy a Dual Terror).

Jake has the black Special HH too. He bought it first and after trying it out I got a Jaguar too I love the scale. I figured though with the looseness of the scale (even though I switched to 11's) that was the reason i was having trouble cutting through which is why I think a tighter bucker would help.

I listened to some youtube (bearing in fact youtube audio is crap) and the FS definitely seems to be lacking in bass which I guess I could boost on the amp. I liked the Pearly Gates the most but is it going to retain its clarity under higher gain? The phat cats also intrigue me but once again the clarity under high gain.

In my other guitar I'm loading EMG's for really high gain but I want this guitar to be versatile. The Jazz for the neck sounds good though.
