Pickup Replacement for Lynch & Stock Dinky XL

Hi All,

I have 2 Dinky's, one with stock Jackson pickup and the other Lynch Screamin Demon.

I was looking at the JB and Duncan Distortion...which one will sound better? I play 80's metal mostly, AC/DC, VH....

Also for a neck pickup I was thinking about a Quarter Pounder....I've read that Warrn DiMartini (my favorite guitarist) had one....

Warren DeMartini uses a JB or an RTM (overwound JB with A2 from Seymour Duncan Custom Shop).

For EVH/WDM sounds, an A2 JB is a pretty good bet.

George Lynch used a Distortion a lot in his early career, and was always fighting with it's harshness. It's basically a JB with a thick ceramic magnet. Lynch is using another CS overwound A2 JB variant these days... along with a wide range of other stuff, he seems to like variety these days.

The stock JB will do old Hagar & Lynch sounds better, though. Try that, and if it's too bright, try the magnet swap.

None of the hot bridge pickups are really right for AC/DC, Screamin' Demon is probably closer for that. By the way, if it's too harsh on the high strings, try swapping the 0.5" hex (allen head) screws under them for standard fillisters (0.75" slotted head). If you want tighter low strings, swapping the fillisters for hex heads under those will help.

If you want a hot bridge pickup with wider range, you should probably look at the Custom 8 or PATB-1b, but those aren't dead-on for classic hair metal, though they're still very good at that style.

Thanks....

I was just listening to the Duncan Distortion, kind of sounds like a JB but with more umph...

What do you think about the DD?

Also, any takers on the quarter pounder (single coil) for the neck?

As I said, Distortion is rather harsh for those styles/artists. Way too hot, compressed & harsh high end for AC/DC. Too raspy for WDM or EVH.

As far as the QP, I don't know, DeMartini used a variety of neck pickups, as did Lynch, and I generally paid more attention to their lead tones...
