pickup selection for alder body/maple neck?

Re: pickup selection for alder body/maple neck?

if you want to go all out, get the RTM. MJ can even make you a match neck pup for a set.

but for production models, JB in the bridge. Full Shred in the neck.

for any mods, JB in the bridge, '59A4n or Jazz/'59A4n

Demon bridge and Alnico II Pro is a great suggestion. If you want more push, go with Distortion bridge and Demon neck.

I like to play 80s metal/hard rock but also like thick power blues too. I am between JB and Custom 5. Was thinking the thickness and paf qualities of the custom 5 might be worth it. What are the distinct differences between these two?

Custom 5 does not sound like a paf, bright highs, no mids and a big, tight bass. U said u want 80's hard rock......thats a JB dude! JB IS 80's!

For the neck, I would recommend a PAF Pro or a PAF Joe. It's probably the only pickup I would use the word "tubular" to describe. Thick but articulate.

It pretty much sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2q9ML4iknE

Definitely the JB. Call me crazy, but I hear a little bit of thickness in the JB (not a ton though) and all of the honk you can ask for, like a good PAF. And for blues, remember that Jeff Beck got some of his best tones out of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IriEq4H1XSU

It can get thicker by adding gain, and you can always adjust the tone controls. Remember, the JB got the "bitey and thin" label mostly from 80s musicians putting them through 69 and later SLP Marshalls (the extra bright plexis)

You seem to be looking for a sound similar to what I seek for in an alder guitar and you seem to like some of the same guitar players I like so I can recommend you the same bridge pickup I use (Screamin' Demon) and in the neck I would choose something like a PAF Joe, PAF pro, SD '59. I have a clip I posted here some time ago for a Joe Satriani contest and there I use my main guitar (Super strat body type, Alder body, 3/4 maple top, 26 fret maple fretboard, Kahler Spyder tremolo, Screamin' Demon in the neck and a DiMarzio Chopper in the bridge) Although the Chopper it's not a full size humbucker, it compares a lot with the '59, but with a single coilish atack and more top end clarity...

Here's the clip and I hope I'm not too late to be of some help for you!! :fingersx:

I know it's been 2 weeks or so but have you finally made a decision?
I also was thinking of a JB bridge for my MIM Strat for the same musical taste.
What pots did you use? 250 or 500?
