I'm looking to replace the pickups in my gibson les paul standard, I play mostly hair metal and metal (guns n roses, skid row, metallica, megadeath) what would be the best suggestions for this kind of music? also if anybody is selling cream duncan distortion pickups i'm interested!

Re: Pickup selection

Welp, you can use alot of things. Distortion would be good. Many guys back then used JBs. And lets not forget the Slash set. What you using for amp?

Re: Pickup selection

Personally I'd go with a SH-14 Custom 5 or just a plain old Custom & a Slash neck. They'll give you plenty of balls but you'll still be able to get some nice cleans from both positions as well...

Re: Pickup selection

the custom family won't do it in terms of tone for what he wants, he would be fair better with and antiquity jb jazz set, a distortion set or a distortion jazz combo, maybe a distortion with a slash neck

the antiquity set is recomended over the regular jb jazz set as it will be more authentic to what everyone used in the 80's

Re: Pickup selection

For skid row I'm thinking distortion I personally think the distortion shines in a les Paul tuned a whole step down the slash pickups or just the regular a2p will get the gnr sound and the Jb will get everything else. I used a Jb and get the attitude of all of those songs. If it helps mustaine and hetfield probably used the Jb at one point or another and gilby Clarke used a Jb for a time in gnr however I have no idea if it was used in any of the records

Re: Pickup selection

hetfield used distortions, also invaders, his explorer had dirty fingers, he also used a custom shop set on his flying v, then after their good gear was stolen james equipped his guitars with invaders to beef up the sound then he switched to EMGs

mustaine used the stock dimarzios on his bc rich guitars for KIMB and Peace Sells recordings, then he got his first custom jackson equipped with a jb on the bridge and only god and dave knows what he had on the neck, he changed neck pickups a couple times, but as a fact is known that dave used the Jazz, the 59, another JB on the neck slot and even a bill lawrence L500 which he used only for the rised rail polepieces as he could shred over them as extra frets

slash actually recorded most of his lines from appetite for destruction with a floyded bc rich warlock (i think), he only used his emblematic LP copy equipped with AP2 buckers for soloing, and even then that LP wasn't used for all of his solos, after appetite he used the LP a bit more but still recorded some riffs and solos with his Bc Rich, Slash's bc rich has been confirmed to had a duncan distortion on the bridge slot

so yeah going by that maybe the most accurate pickup combo you can go for will be a Distortion on the bridge with an AP2 on the neck, you might even put a slash sig on the neck slot, a marshall-ish amp and a tube screamer(you can use a clone or a tweaked screamer like the mxr berzerker or digitech bad monkey) are totally necessary for those tones

Pickup selection

I got early 70s DiMarzio Superdistortions - would suit what you play really well Just listen to Kiss! my playing, not so much, but if they are standard Gibson ALNICO pickups, they would suit me!
