I pulled the trigger and got a Jackson RR3 V (black/chrome) as I could not pass up the deal ($450.00 w/case, in near cherry condition). I figured that if I did not like the pickups (Duncan Designed), I would change them out and still be ahead over the cost of a new (same model) guitar. Well, while the DD pups are ok, my MIA Peavey Patriot with the JB Trembucker (b) and PG1
club the poor things like a baby seal. I really have to crank the gear up to get anywhere the same level, and the sound is too muddy with the DD's.
I was getting ready to order pickups, and I noticed that the pole spacing on the trem spaced DD at the bridge is way wider than the strings. I got out my calipers and measured my Peavey string spacing (at the bridge) and compared it to my Jackson. The Floyd Rose is string spacing is narrower than the spacing with the tremolo on the Peavey, enough that regular spaced JB humbucker poles would probably align much better than the JB Trembucker would. Any other Jackson owners (past or present) here who have run into this?
On the pickups, the bridge gets a JB. No other way about it. That pickup is me...lol! I love what it has done for my Peavey, it is like a new guitar. But when it comes to the neck pup, I am tilting between the SH2n Jazz (as the current RR3 are equipped with) and the SH6n Distortion. In the opinions of you out there who know, which one would be more like the JB? I like the clarity that the Jazz has, but from what I understand, it is a lower output pup. I play 70's, 80's and 90's rock and metal, more of a rhythm player than lead.
Any suggestions or opinions are welcome, and thank you in advance.
On the Jackson, I scored good on that one. The kid who owned it did not get it set up right (or at all). Strings were just about flat on the fretboard, he had changed strings (lighter) and the Floyd was tilted way back, and the truss rod was tight enough that the neck was flat as a board. I went to town on it and dialed everything in. I had to let the neck sit for a couple of days to get the proper bow to set back into it, but it settled down right where I like it. The pickups were cranked way down in the body too. It wuz messed up...
The action is low and smooth now, no buzz. The Floyd is flat and true to the body, the pickups are up where they can actually do something (well, as good as they can anyway...lol). The reason it is in such good shape is because he could not get it dialed in right, so it basically sat in its case. When I saw it, I knew it was a diamond in the rough. Exactly what I was looking for!
I convinced the wife to let me get it by buying her a new blue Barcus-Berry Acoustic Violin...
Well, actually I intended on getting her one for Valentine's day anyway, but I bet it helped smooth the way for the Jackson. Now she is plugging into my gear to experiment on it. She is a good violin player, and it is fun dialing in the gear for her.
Oh well, enough of that...
