Pickup Similar To The PRS Grissom?

I have a PRS DGT David Grissom guitar. I love the bridge pickup in that thing and would like to get another for a different guitar. They don't sell them separately and if you find a take out for sale they're really expensive. So, is there a pickup that comes close to it that I can get? As far as specs go, I only know it's a hotter PAF style at about 9K with an Alnico magnet. "Sounds" to me like A5, but I don't know for sure. Any ideas? Thanks!

You might have to look to a custom winder if you want a tonal match. Specs, whilst informative, give you only a partial sense of the pickup.

Zhangbucker might be the go-to man here - he posts on this forum and is a specialist at the 'hot PAF' range of 8.5-10k.

I know our Custom Shop can build them, and has the specs on many pickups throughout the industry. They might have the formula, just ask.

Re: Pickup Similar To The PRS Grissom?

I've never played a PRS Grissom.

But I've read on the PRS forum that the pickups are similar to an alnico 2 PAF and use an alnico 2 magnet. That could be true or untrue.

I've also read that the pickups are similar to Pearly Gates but that the PG's are not quite as hot. Again, that could be true or untrue.

But if true, then the Custom Shop PG's might do the trick because they are hotter than the standard PG's.

I can tell you that the regular PG's and the CS PG's are my favorite '59 style PAF pickup and that I have them in two of my own PRS guitars.

DGT Treble pickup
Measures 11k output average
AlNiCo II Magnet with Alnico V Slugs
42 guage wire
7,080 turns

I owned a set in 2010. Traded them for a Rockbox Boiling Point OD that I was able to flip a year later for $350.
I liked them, but they didn't quite get what I wanted in my 93 CE24 (which has an alder body with a maple cap).

I think those are old specs from 1995. The current pickup doesn't have separate alnico slugs and is only about 9K. I own two Grissom guitars and have had a peak under the cover of one of them.

Just to update; I contacted the Custom Shop and they said they don't have the specs for the Grissom pickup. Oh, well....

These pickups are around, and are highly sought-after. I'm surprised boutique winders haven't picked up a set to analyze them in an effort of providing an aftermarket equivalent.

Yeah I would think someone would have figured out the formula by now. I can't imagine the recipe is so different than anything out there. But now I am interested, too.
