Pickup specs off.

I just got some texas specials and the resisiance I measured on 2 pickups was off. The neck is suppose to be 6.2 and its 5.9. The middle is suppose to be 6.5 and is 6.7. Is this normal? Also there was glue in the holes where the screws are suppose to go.

Re: Pickup specs off.

This is normal. I've gone thru many PU's, and the readings are are usually off from the manaufacturer's specs. There's a tolerance range each manufacturer has, and their published spec is probably an average. Plus readings vary with the temperature (the higher the temp the higher the ohms).

Re: Pickup specs off.

I bought them on ebay and want to be sure they weren't knock offs. Here's a pic of the wire colors and custom shop sticker. They have white and black cloth wire with the middle yellow and black. Can anyone who has these tell me if they are correct? and is that normal for glue to be in the mounting holes?

Re: Pickup specs off.

yeah no biggie there is always some tolerance and the specs are probably taken under different environmental conditions than where you are

Re: Pickup specs off.

Does that mean my neck pickup will sould like a Fender 54' pickup rather than a texas special since it's 5.9K like the 54 neck? Also is the custom shop sticker suppose to be colored or just black and silver like in the pic?

Re: Pickup specs off.

no itll still sound more like a texas special. different wind and wire

Re: Pickup specs off.

Am i wrong but the the left and right one are not texas specials. All of them should have a triangular base??

They are.......it's just the angle. .....good observation though. Another question. How do I strip cloth wire?

Re: Pickup specs off.

Okay, thanks. What a pain trying to screw them in. The holes were 2 sizes too small with glue in them. is that common with fender, all manufacturers or not at all? For next time, is it best to drill them out?

Re: Pickup specs off.

Are you sure it's glue? Usually it's wax. I normally run the screws into the baseplate from the backside to clear the holes before mounting the pickups. This minimizes the risk of slipping with the screw or screwdriver and damaging the coil.

+1 I was thinking it was wax too.

Re: Pickup specs off.

The only difference is the atmospheric temperature. Yes they do react to temperatures! Go ahead and put the pickup in the sun for three hours and then test it you will find the resistance goes up, if you put it in the freezer for an hour the resistance goes down. I tried that experiment this winter and there was a 1.7k difference in readings between high and low.

oops thats a lot for a SC!

Re: Pickup specs off.

Could have been wax but ther actual hole was too small in the pickup too. Was pretty hard to make a new one.

Re: Pickup specs off.

Is it possible if installed right for it to be out of phase in pos 2 and 4 if there is a rw/rp middle pickup?
