Pickup suggestion needed... and several questions..

I feel kinda silly asking this, but I'm kinda stumped. I have a US Charvel. Came with a Duncan Custom in it. Nice.. Of course I changed it to a custom 8. Better!! Anyhow, since I have another Charvel with a 59/custom Hybrid in it and a Kramer with a JB, I wanted to go with something alittle more radical for this axe. So, bought a Duncan Distortion.. The pup is direct mount so the pup was too tall stock, so I removed a spacer, laid the other spacer on its side and put a thinner ceramic mag it. From what I gather, this shouldn't change the tone too much from stock....?? It sounds pretty good, (I cant say what I dislike about it other than I wish there was alittle less high end and more grunt in the low mids.) but it isnt tugging at my heartstrings to play it.. The other Charvel with the hybrid sounds amazing!!! I want this one to sound amazing too, only more aggressive. Thought about trying a PATB2, but the problem is, I need a RED pickup..

I need some ideas... Bottom line is Im looking for something that sounds great for rock and metal, has a bit of heat in the output and maybe sounds kinda interesting.. And comes in red.. haha
I had an alt 8 in a guitar way back when they first came out. I remember liking it, but cant really remember how it sounded. Can someone refresh my memory by giving me a comparison to either a Jb/custom or distortion?

other pups Ive never tried but am curious about are: The perpetual burn and screamin demon.

Any suggestion from other brands?? Ive heard good things about the motor city Afwau (sp?) but wonder if thats too close to a JB?

Ive played a tone zone and a couple of other Dimarzios, but not many. I know most all theirs come in red.

Last question is this: Although it wont work for this guitar cuz of color avail, but Ive gotten VERY interested in the PATB2. how does that compare in tone to the regular distortion?? Ive compared the specs and all..looks like it has more Lows and mids than the reg distortion.??

Thanks for reading

For what it's worth, you might can special order a PATB-2 shop floor custom with a red bobbin. Although, the unique bobbin that it requires might make that a no go. As far as the tone of it goes, I found that it was a bit thicker than the regular Distortion. In a good way. It wasn't mud, the tone just fattened up. It's a bit hotter, too, to my ear.

For other considerations, the Bareknuckle Nailbomb is a pretty cool pup. I had it for a bit, but swapped it out because I didn't like the midrange on it. Now that I mention it, I didn't like the Alt 8 because of its wonky midrange, either. Anyway, you can order Bareknuckle in different colors.

You can also try a Dimarzio Evolution. That's one of the Dimarzios that I actually like. However, if you didn't like the screamy-ness of the Distortion, you probably won't like the Evo. They sound similar to me.

Yeah the PATB2 sounds like it might be ideal, just not avail in red... I dont know that they would do a custom one even cuz of the poles.. And, Id rather not have to go to that price point

Pegasus!!!

I love them, they should give you what your looking for & they come with red bobbins through the Custom Shop production line... Basically it will run you $10-$20 more than a regular black Trembucker but they can sometimes be found for the same price if you look hard!

I dont see Pegasus avail as a six string model..??

Alnico 8 magnet on the Distortion or Alternative 8?

A little less highs and more grunt in the low mids sounds like it'd pretty much take the Distortion into JB territory, but Alnico 8 could be a good middle ground.
