My explorer needs new pups, the stock pups are a little lackluster.I'd love to hear what people think.my style of playing was influenced by Neil Young,Robin Trower,Billy Gibbons to name a few.thanks to all

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone korina explorer

I'm thinking P rails, Phat Cats, or Pearly Gates.

I have a suggestion but you won't like it.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone korina explorer

My 2 cents but I'd go with either a JB or Custom bridge and 59 neck. Never had much luck with the Pearly Gates but I think you have to be Billy Gibbons himself to make that work.

I'd put a 59 in the neck and either a Custom or a Custom 5 in the bridge. This would allow you a very balanced guitar that could cover a lot of tonal ground.

One of the Custom series (excluding the CC) and either a '59, Jazz or PG neck.

The majority here pretty much states what I have to say.

I love the 59n and a custom of some sorts appears suitable in the bridge I would go for Alnico8.

I don't have very much experience with Seymour Duncans yet, but I would start with something classic, e.g., SH-2 (Jazz model) neck and SH-4 (JB model) bridge set. SH-2 is said to work especially well with mahogany, but korina gives similar sound. I would also consider adding some extra pickup switching, e.g., coil tapping, parallel/series, or phase switching.

A PG set will rock for a Billy Gibbons. A Custom bridge and 59N . Or even 59 set will rock.

Korina explorers have a really nice, thick midrange bloom! I think you would get alot of mileage out of a Custom5 and '59 neck in that axe!

I started this thread and I had decided to go with a pair of duncan seth lovers, I had put a pair in an Ibanez TM71 semihollowbody and they sound awesome ,there is no wax in these pups so they are microphonic, and they give a great Kerrang! Now I wasn't thrilled about dropping another $200 into my epiphone explorer so I was waiting to see what came around(craigslist, ebay, etc.) ,then I read on a thread somewhere a guy said to try adjusting the polepieces and pickup height . I sat down with the korina explorer raised the high E pole so just about the whole screw head was showing then raised the others so they angled down to the low E was only one full turn up.I just used this as a starting point knowing I would have many adjustments to do. Before I started, the poles were basically flush with the gold covers and as you know the pups were bland and lifeless.after raising the pole pieces HOLY **** the pup came alive.after many adjustments the guitar is now giggable.I may still swap out the pups but I will give them a chance for a couple of months and see if the guitar develops a personality. So before you spend big bucks on new pups break out the screwdrivers ,you may like what you have.

I dropped a set of Pearly gates in my explorer, its pretty awesome. The bridge is insanely bright tho, be warned!
