Pickup Suggestions for Schecter C-1 Exotic?

I'm looking to replace the pickups in my Schecter C-1 Exotic (Mahogany body, flame maple top, Ebony Neck). I mainly play downtuned metal, but would like some versatility because dynamics are important in the music I like. Not considering Actives.

I use a mesa boogie dual rectifier amp, and am looking to get a tone similar to bands like Mastodon, Tool, and Gojira. Im into a lot of sludge/death metal, and will be playing in Drop C mostly.

Right now I'm looking at the Duncan Distortion or JB for the bridge. Leaning towards the DD because of its suitability for heavy distortion and a tighter bottom end than the JB. Kind of ruled out the Custom because of reviews of it being too bottom heavy and scooped for downtuned music with a mahogany guitar. Any suggestions or recommendations?

I also was looking at some of the Dimarzios (X2N, Super D, etc.), and heard some good things about the SD Black Winters.

Id also appreciate if you could recommend a good pickup to pair with in the neck for whatever bridge pup you suggest.

Thanks

Black Winter set tighter bottom end than the DD, and better dynamics.

Interesting..

Ive been doing more research today and now its definitely between the DD and BW. Hard to decide though. Ive only heard good things about both.

Apparently the BW has better clarity? That actually would be crucial to my decision since I play a LOT of huge chords with high gain.

Consider the Pegasus and Sentient as well.

The PATB-1 handles gain exceedingly well, has a great tight bottom end and retains great clarity as well. If you needed more gain from the pickup, there is a distortion PATB. They make a calibrated neck pickup somewhere around 7.5k to 8k, I'd have to look again. I have an 80's pointy axe that just never sounded right with any pickups; JB, Distortion, 59', PAF Pro, Tone Zone... nada. As soon as I put the PATB in I knew it was right. I put the PATB stack in the single slot at the neck and those will always stay in that guitar.

Something to think about and they're a very underrated pickup.

The black winter has better clarity IME, I have used a DD for more than a decade, and I LOVE the black winter. IME, the black winter is very like a DD with a tighter bottom end, less spiky high, and better clarity. I no longer have DDs installed in any of my 30+ guitars. The BW feels to me like an upgraded, more modern DD, almost like Duncan was doing a high end, boutique version of the distortion. If a different logo was on it, it would easily sell for double and it would sell.

Someone else mentioned a PATB 1, which is also one heck of a cool pickup. I prefer for a lot of things the BW, but the PATB 1 & 2 are also great. They might not be my first choice for exactly what you are after.

Custom.

Because you heard wrong. It's perfect for mahogany and downtuned music. I play in open B.

True. With the 21 day guarantee it's hard to go wrong. Believe me, everyone here has tried MANY sets of pickups. It's not too often that you find the exact pickup that sounds just like you want on the first try. It does happen, but don't be afraid to cycle through a couple of sets. Just be sure to give them two weeks of playing so they can settle in and your ears can adjust..
