Pickup Suggestions

Re: Pickup Suggestions

What is it about the pickup you don't like?

What kind of amp do you use, and what styles do you play?

Re: Pickup Suggestions

Blues sound? I'm guessing the stock ceramic pickup is a touch too hot? Generally speaking, any vintage themed Tele pickup will get you in the ball park, any narrower than that is truly a preference issues. I definitely like a more vintage output bridge pickup in a Tele though, when you get something hotter like Hot Rails or Quarter Pounds it makes for a serviceable rock'n'roll guitar, but a lot of the Tele voicing goes away.

My favorite aftermarket vintage voiced / AlNiCo Tele bridge is the SD Antiquity II http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/telecaster/vintage-output/1102422_bridge/ , it's just a bit softer sounding while still being very clear and vintage, a lot like the Ant IIs for Strat. Effortless to EQ. I did not like Fender Nocasters (too bright), nor Texas Specials (too thin).

The stock AlNiCo's from my MIJ reissue 69 Tele and the stock AlNiCo from a MIM antigua reissue Tele are my favorites in general, which I think just goes to show "middle of the road" is often the best way to go to get the most out of a Tele. It's such a proven guitar, there's not much to fix with them.

The neck humbucker is pretty good. It has a nice growl to it but the bridge pickup is a little dull and is missing the Tele twang. I Am using a Mustang 1 amp usually using the Bassman amp. I am looking to replace the Amp as well, likely with something from the Vox family.

I also like the Fender Fideli'trons a lot, I haven't tried actual Gretsch or TV Jones Filter'trons lately, but the Fender's leave me wanting for nothing. I've heard they're a little darker/fuller than classic spec Filter'trons; not a negative.

The SD Antiquity is a safe bet for sure. It looks pretty good too, more aged, not nearly as grimy as the picture on SD's site suggests. The only striking thing about the Ant's is the dark pole pieces. From a distance, the pickup looks all around dark, but I think it would fit well with the look of a Cabronita, especially a black one.

Re: Pickup Suggestions

The guitar under discussion has a Bigsby vibrato, sitting on the requisite adapter plate. Much of the traditional Tele twang comes from the vintage stamped steel bridge.
