Pickup suggestions

Hi all! I'm new to the aftermarket pickup world and am looking for some advice. I have 3 guitars and I would like to change the pickups in them. One is a 1983 Explorer, another is Heritage H-150 Deluxe, and finally a Heritage H-157 (les paul custom). I play an a/b rig with a being a fender '65 twin re-issue and b a mesa .50 cal+ half stack. My sound is good but somehting is just kind of lacking. I'm really searching out the guitar tone of Pepper Keenan and the tones he got on Down NOLA and Down II. I was thinking of setting one guitar up with a PEarly Gates and Custom, or PG and Custom Custom. Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pickup suggestions

Three guitars? How about telling us about your favorite so we can tackle this one guitar at a time. Thanks! Lew

Re: Pickup suggestions

YES ANOTHER HERITAGE PLAYER!!!! hehe uhhhh Welcome to the forum man!

Lots of guys have different thoughts on what sounds the best in a paul style guitar. In my 150 I've got a Jazz neck Alnico 2 Pro Bridge, in double creme of course. :)

Now I'll be honest and tell you I'm not familiar with the tone you're talking about, but on this link you can read my generic pup breakdown, I can answer questions directly related to that, or tell us what the stock pups are missing,
sparkle, spank, grind?

Hope that helps you some man!

Re: Pickup suggestions

I guess the biggest thing they are missing is spank. I want a little tighter sound, but I still want want smooth leads.

Re: Pickup suggestions

I'm the only guitar player in my band so I have to have a big guitar sound. I like a good defined bass, strong mids, and just enough top end. I also use alot of weird chord voicings and need to be able to hear them even when my amp is overdriven.

Re: Pickup suggestions

I know pepper was using Duncan Invaders around the NOLA time--I'm pretty sure he even uses one on the Live Volume Video.

I'd go with a Invader, If I were you, dude.
