Pickup to replace DeArmond 2K Single coils

I have a DeArmond Starfire Special with a pair of surface mount 2K single coils. The pickup is 1 7/16 wide X 3 1/2 long, and is 5/8 tall. I am looking for a pickup that will play rock and blues with a touch of jazz thrown in. Any ideas / thoughts on what will fit both physically and tonally? Oh! Also, I prefer to stay with single coil. Thanx in advance.

Here is a pic:

Re: Pickup to replace DeArmond 2K Single coils

Thanx for the ideas so far. I saw the Custom Shop p-ups, whoa! they are pricey! The P90s look like the best fit tonally, but not sure if they will fit without irreversible modification. Will do the math on this later today or tomorrow.

So, while renewing the p-ups, what is the thinking about renewing the pots and caps. The pots are a bit scratchy. The original wiring diagram calls for 500k pots with 223 caps. 250k vs 500k vs 1meg, A vs B vs D, (which is what comes standard for tone control on the Starfire Special), and then there are the caps . . . I am still trying to get my head around what the different sized pot/cap combos will get me. Any thoughts there?

And, while I am on the topic of pots, wouldn't it make more sense to have linear taper for both sound and tone? It would seem the increments are more predictable. What does the audio taper get you while playing?

Sorry for all the questions, perhaps I've been playing only acoustic for too long.

This looks like a job for T. V. Jones Pickups.

GFS make some reasonably priced surface mount pickups that will fit in the same dimensions. They make a mini-humbucker that might be what you're looking for.

+1

TV Jones offers his Filtertron pickups also in De Armond Mount. They are humbucking, but brighter than a paf, with more clarity, and they have a single coil feel. Fantastic pickups.

hmm, never heard of 'em. Taking a look at their website right now. They do have great sound, and offer most of their pickup in a DeArmond mounting.

Very cool!

Thanx for the info.

I am under doctor's orders NOT to look at the T. V. Jones website. It always gives me severe GAS and that Brian Setzer video triggers fits of envy and terrible mood swings. :D
