Pickup too close to strings causes feedback?

I discovered I was prone to feedback last night with the new Custom Custom I just dropped in in the bridge position. Is this due to the nickel cover, it being too close to the string, or a combination thereof?

Possible the pickup needs wax potting. Did you install the cover yourself? Lew

No, I ordered the pickup with the cover. I just assumed the Custom Custom was already wax potted....incorrect assumption?

No...it should be wax potted. Maybe the wax potting wasn't as thorough as it should've been and maybe the pickup needs to be submerged in hot wax again to complete the job. Or maybe that's the not the problem. Usually tho, it is the problem. Lew
