Pickup types not usually associated with certain woods

Lately I've been into unconventional combinations, such as a mahogany guitar with single coils, rosewood guitars, etc.

what are some recognized guitars you've seen that fit the bill?

Re: Pickup types not usually associated with certain woods

None.

I've never paid any attention to that stuff. I use my favorite 3 or 4 pickups in all of my guitars and, IMO, my guitars sound as good or better than anyone I know.

And I know a lot of great players!

Re: Pickup types not usually associated with certain woods

Some think Maple is bright, some think JB's are bright, but some guys love JB's in Maple single pickup superstrats. The resulting tone is "strong" and authoritative, but not overly bright.

Single coils in Mahogany are okay, but for me it's got to be a mahogany superstrat, H/S/S. I'm not fond of Mahogany strats, S/S/S.

P90's usually show up in Mahogany guitars, but they're great in Alder and Ash Fenderish guitars.

And of course, there's Seymour's TeleGib.

I love mini-humbuckers and Firebird pickups in Fenderish instruments as well. Lipstick tubes in one of my Strats, G&L ASAT pickups in one of my Basswood guitars sound fantastic. They put back all the bite and sparkle that the Basswood tames.

^^ I've heard good things about single coils in basswood. By the way, Frank, love the Falbaxxas posted on Jemsite :).

A set of these single coils in a mahogany guitar is the ticket :cool2:.

The Rails (Hot, Cool, Vintage) aren't associated with any wood.

You call a Les Paul Junior or Special an unconventional combination? Come on now...

Re: Pickup types not usually associated with certain woods

Nope. I don't mess with a sure thing. I use all mahogany guitars with DD pickups. I don't go any further than that, and I don't need to.

I like to **** around with things like this, even though I feel like I'm breaking the law. :)
